Robert Moates Obituary

Published by Bliley's Funeral Home - Chippenham from Jul. 23 to Jul. 24, 2009.
MOATES, Robert "Bob" Courtland Sr., entered into eternal rest July 21, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer, at age 74. He was the son of Bascom and Tena Gilliam Moates of Richmond, who preceded him in death. Mr. Moates was a well-known area businessman and founder of Bob Moates Sports Shop, Inc. in Chesterfield County and Charlotte Courthouse, Va., along with Rebel Sporting Goods in Keysville, Va. He was a licensed electrician and master gunsmith, and his business in Chesterfield County became a local landmark for area sportsmen over the last 50 years. Mr. Moates was known to many thousands of Virginians as "General Robert E. Lee," a persona he took on as a living historian and reenactor. His uncanny resemblance to General Lee created much demand for his services at historical reenactments, ceremonies, parades, and the movie industry. Mr. Moates was the founder of the General Robert E. Lee Camp #1589 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Charlotte County Grays Camp in Charlotte Courthouse, Va. As a life member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, he served in the elected offices as Commander, Adjutant, Treasurer, and Lt. Commander. Mr. Moates served his country as a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Virginia National Guard. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 22 years, Grace; two sons, Robert Jr. and James; and many nieces and nephews. His family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Bliley's-Chippenham,6900 Hull Street Road, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, with interment in Hollywood Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Meals on Wheels of Charlotte County, Virginia.

To the Family of Mr. Moates:

As a member of the SCV, a retired veteran, and re-enactor, may I offer my heart felt condolences to you all in the passing of your loved one.

May God in His mercy extend to you all an extra measure of his peace, love, and strength during this difficult time.

I got to know Mr. Moates during my participation in many re-enactments and remember how he became "Gen. Lee" to us. He looked so much like the General that people would not get close to him and just stand several feet away--as if he were the real Gen. Lee! He will surely be missed in the Southern heritage and reenactment communities.

I know he's now with the Lord dwelling in peace in that land where he'll fellowship with Gen. Lee, "Stonewall", and all his heroes.

I apologize for not having been able to get to the viewing or funeral due to sickness but I want you to know that you are in my prayers. You have my deepest condolences. Bobs' passing takes something away from our community that cannot be replaced. he was truly one of a kind in the best way. If there is anything I can do, do not hesitate to ask.

Under this tree I shall rest.
Under this tree I will wait for Thee.
Under this tree I will see Thee.
Under this tree I will take my rest as the day draws to it's end.
Under this tree I must wait for Thee.
I have worked a long on this day.
I have worked hard for this one day.
Many a day I have worked and prayed for Thee to see you coming for me.
I will take my rest under this tree and I will wait for Thee.
The road you gave has been long and hard.
This road that you have set has been rough on me.
This road you had laid for me.
The road has been narrow and long but here I am at it's end.
So under this tree I will wait for Thee.
So here I lay under this tree praying to see Thee.
Here I am under this tree sining praises for Thee.
For the life that you have given to me.

Bob introduced me to the hobby of muzzleloading more than 40 years ago.

Bob was one of the founding members of the First Richmond Rifles, the third oldest team in the North-South Skirmish Association.

He was a good friend to my father and his steadfast support for what is right in our Country was very much a mark of his civility.

I never knew Mr. Moates personally, but had the pleasure of being in the congregation each Memorial Day at the Confederate Memorial Chapel in Richmond and hearing him read General Order #9, Lee's Farewell address to his troops.
I know the service will not be the same without him, but I will add him to the list of men who's memory I will honor as we gather at the Chapel on Memorial Day!

The first thing that I thought of when I received the call that Bob had passed from this life to his eternal life was that he was probably at that moment discussing strategy with Lee, Jackson, Stuart and the rest of the heroes of the Confederacy.

It has been my honor and pleasure to work with and for Bob. He will be missed in a lot of areas. We have lost one of our greatest supporters of all things Southern; of Second Amendment rights; a strong and loving husband and a good friend. But wait...we have not "lost" him because we know where he has gone. He has gone to be with his loved ones and heroes with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Rest well my friend....we will be along in a bit. Until then...we will miss you!

When I received the call that told me Bob had gone to be with the Lord, the first thing that ran through my mind was that he was probably at that moment meeting with Lee, Jackson, Stuart and the rest of the Confederate heroes.

Over the years it has been my honor to know and work with Bob and Grace on both a business and personal level. As someone else said, "They are a class act." Bob will be missed in a lot of areas. The Confederacy has lost one of it's greatest advocates and historians; the Sons of Confederate Veterans has lost one of it's most loyal supporters; Grace has lost a strong and loving mate; the world has lost a true Southern Gentleman and I have lost a friend. BUT WAIT...Bob isn't lost...we KNOW where he is...in heaven with his Savior and among the saints and heroes who have gone on ahead. We'll be along in a bit my friend.

It is with great sadness that I learn of the passing of a fine gentleman. Although I only knew him as a customer of his gunsmithing skills I was privileged to receive his wisdom and insight concerning many more matters as well.

May the family find solace at this time in knowing that their loss is shared by those who knew or knew of Bob and his many endeavors.

Grace & Family,
I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Bob. He was such a good man and represented Gen. Robert E. Lee so well. I even believe that the General would have approved of Bob as his personal representative. Bob was such a patriot and loved his country. I am very thankful for the times when Bob invited me into your home. It was an honor to get to know Bob on a personal level. I will miss him. Please know that I will be praying for God's peace and comfort to be with you. If I can serve you in any way, please let me know how.

It was always so much fun when my father & I would stop in his shop over the years and I would listen to these two go on & on about guns, electrical work, the Navy & poke fun with each other about looking like General Lee. Bob always won each & every time. Later becoming close again with family/friends at WBTS events & functions made those memories even more special with Bob. My husband enjoyed working with Bob on so many SCV projects over the years. He was such a wonderful person who always knew just how to smile or just what to say that would let you know you were genuinely and sincerely cared about. He will truly be missed by so very many. My family's thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends during this sad and difficult time.

On a cool & very foggy morning in Orange County in 1994, I was a Confederate private of the 5th Va infantry, arriving for a Wilderness Campaign reenactment. I loaded all of my gear on my back, strode out of the parking area, & unexpectedly stepped back in time!! I had not gone more than 100 paces, when there materializing out of the ground fog in front of me stood General Robert E. Lee, just coming out of his wall tent. He greeted me warmly, & after catching my breath, I told him that I was sure that we'd whip the Yanks today ... & he smiled & replied "With soldiers like yourself, & God willing ... we SHALL carry the day!!" This particular "magic moment" was my first encounter with Bob Moates, & certainly not my last. I had the pleasure to work with him on more than numerous occasions over the years, & ALWAYS enjoyed spending time just conversing, & sharing the time of day with him!! From Henricus Park, to many reenactments, or living history programs on many of Virginia's Civil War battlefields, I always considered it an honor & a priveledge to be in his presence, & share his love of history!! He always had a smile, & a kind word for all of us common soldiers!! Richmond, & the Living History community has lost one of it's true foundation stones that can NEVER be replaced!!
MARSE ROBERT ... YOU ARE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS, SOULS, & MEMORIES!!!

Bob Moates was truly "on of a kind." Mixed with sadness at his death is relief that he is free from pain and happiness that he will now realize his wish to sit by the campfire with the heroes of that "long gray line" that he so admired. Rest well, Bob.

He was a kind gentleman that was always willing to help a fellow history buff. He will be sincerely missed by everyone who ever had the honor to know him. A true Virginia Gentleman. Now he can rest easy with his heroes in Confederate Grey.
