Robert Baxter Neill, age 99, of Binghamton, NY, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, at the NYS Veterans Home at Oxford. Born in Ithaca on May 3, 1926, Robert's life was deeply rooted in Binghamton and New Hartford, where he built a legacy of dedication, kindness, and love. During World War II, Robert served his country at Fort Dix, where he managed payroll and helped process military discharges. Following his service, he attended Cornell University and dedicated nearly forty years to General Electric. In retirement, Robert's commitment to his community only deepened-he devoted himself to volunteer work and leadership at the First Congregational Church of Binghamton, serving on the Board of Trustees and leading many charitable initiatives, including Thanksgiving meal donations, New Year's Eve dinners, backpack drives, and the CHOW Walk.
Family was at the heart of everything Robert did. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Elizabeth Dugdale Neill, and by five daughters who brought him immense pride: Sherry Neill Purcell of Venice, CA; Jackie Neill Gavette (Ronald) of Penn Yan, NY; Barbara Neill Gold (Daniel) of Verona, NY; Tamara Neill McCarthy (Michael) of Glens Falls, NY; and Holly Neill Whelan (Charles Joseph III "C.J.") of Centennial, CO. He was also blessed with nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward E. Neill and Lillian Baxter Neill; his siblings, Edward and Mary Neill; his grandson Andy Gold and his first wife of 49 years, Beverly Ralston Neill. Robert embraced life's simple pleasures-gardening, reading, photography, and exploring new places. He and Elizabeth traveled together throughout nearly every state in their RV, made two memorable trips to Alaska, and journeyed to Canada and the United Kingdom. His curiosity and love for learning continued throughout his life.
A Memorial service to celebrate Robert's life will be held on Saturday, September 27 at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Binghamton. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Robert's memory with an act of kindness or a donation to the First Congregational Church in Binghamton.
