Robert Philipps Obituary
Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Robert Andrew Philipps-known to all as Bob- completed his earthly mission and took the next step in his eternal journey at the age of 74, August 16, 2025, in St. George, Utah. Born August 24, 1950, in Newark, New Jersey, to Robert Herman Philipps III and Nancy Ann King. Bob grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he first discovered his love for sports. A skilled pitcher and avid basketball player, he carried that competitive spirit and enthusiasm throughout his life. After high school, Bob attended Ohio State University before serving in the Marines during the Vietnam era. Following a medical discharge, he made his way west. A layover in Salt Lake City changed everything. He spent two weeks at Temple Square which led him to embrace the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and he soon entered the waters of baptism and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Bob enrolled at BYU and after a year was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Hawaii. On return, he graduated from BYU with a science degree and went on to get another degree in math and chemistry in New Mexico. He graduated from the University of Utah with a master's degree in statistics. Bob's educational journey matched his zest for life. His love of numbers and teaching inspired students in the Jordan School District, Southern Utah University, and later as a substitute math teacher in the Washington School District. Bob also worked as a long-haul truck driver, enjoying the open road and the freedom of travel.
A devoted sports fan, Bob devoured three newspaper sports sections daily and especially cherished his BYU Cougars. Friends often joked that he could have been a first-class broadcaster-he always had the stats, insights, and passion.
But beyond sports and academics, Bob's heart was anchored in faith. As his sister Sue said, "He had a doctorate in religion." He was a stalwart defender of truth, devoted to his ward families, and tireless in his work of family history and temple service. Bob found joy in performing ordinances for his ancestors and is now surely embraced by the multitudes he served on the other side of the veil. Bob is survived by his sister, Sue Philipps (Ken) Moon of Columbus, Ohio; stepchildren Daniel Allred, Jessica Anderson, Byron Allred, Emily Allred, and Esther Allred; and nine beloved step-grandchildren. They loved Bob deeply and will carry his example of enthusiasm, kindness, and devotion forward.
Bob's legacy is one of determination, loyalty, and faith. He lived with passion and optimism-and would surely remind us all to cheer loud, love strong, and never miss a Cougar game.
There will be a graveside celebration of Bob's life at 10am on Saturday August 23, 2025 at the St. George Cemetery. Limited covered seating under a shade tent will be available. The service will be lead by his Bishop and will be approximately 30 minutes long. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Robert, please visit our Tree Store.
