Robert Quinlan Obituary

Robert Clayton Quinlan
June 12, 1930 - December 21, 2023
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Clayton Quinlan, a beloved husband, father, teacher, and friend.
Born on June 12, 1930, in San Francisco to Albert and Eula Quinlan, Robert's educational journey led him through Lawton Grade School, Lincoln High School, City College, San Jose State University, and San Francisco State, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English and journalism.
Robert proudly served in the US Army from 1952-54, stationed primarily at Fort Ord. He was an avid San Francisco Giants fan during his youth, college, and military leaves. He sold cushions at Seal Stadium and later Candlestick Park, supporting his education and nurturing his unwavering passion for the team. One of his greatest joys was witnessing the San Francisco Giants' historic victory in the 2010 World Series in person, surrounded by his beloved wife, Mary, and their children. Throughout his life, he deeply loved and respected his brother, Richard Quinlan, cherishing their bond and shared memories.
Robert was a dedicated educator who impacted his students, earning them respect and gratitude. He married fellow English teacher Mary McKnight and enjoyed 58 joyful years together. Their sons, Thomas McKnight Quinlan and David Geoffrey Quinlan, and grandchildren, Chase and Blake, brought immeasurable happiness to their lives. Mary and Robert traveled the world, reveling in adventures documented with engaging stories, vivid pictures, and treasured memories.
Robert also found great joy in coaching Little League baseball, with his teams winning 11 championships in Hillsborough/San Mateo. Family gatherings filled with friendly competition, discussing grammar intricacies during dinner, and cherished summers spent in Maui. In his favorite moments, Robert and Mary would relax in their backyard, savoring cocktails while watching their boys play water basketball under the setting sun's golden glow, with the barbecue heating.
A celebration of life for Robert will be held on January 13th, 2 p.m. at The Episcopal Church of St. Matthew, at 1 South El Camino Real, San Mateo, Calif. 94401. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's & Dementia Association at www.alz.org.

Mr Robert Quinlan was my journalism teacher for three years during the early 70´s. I grew as a writer, a leader and a journalist under his tutelage. And chose the same field as my career. So much about how I taught and advised my own journalism students goes back to my experiences in his classroom. I´m retired now, but I still ask a lot of questions and spot story ideas and a few of my own students have gone on to teach and advise publications, so his reach into the future is strong. Rest in peace Mr. Quinlan and thank you, for everything

Going through life our teachers come and go. In my life I remember with clarity only two teachers. My 3rd grade teacher and Mr. Quinlan in high school.
It´s because he showed he cared about our education. He celebrated our successes and picked us up when we made mistakes. He made me feel good about my work in his class.
RIP Mr. Quinlan. To his family, I´m terribly sorry for your loss.

My wonderful English teacher! NOBODY used the word "ubiquitous" as well as, or as many times, as he! Thank you, Mr. Quinlan. Rest peacefully.

My sincere condolences to Mary and her family. Mr Quinlan inspired my love for Journalism which still prevails all these years later after my 1968 SMHS graduation. And I´ve fond memories of the Q´s coming for cocktails to our home before stepping out for dinner with my parents. It was quite a treat to have your high school teacher in your home & we kids were on very good behavior. Great memories of a great man.
