Robert married the love of his life, Phinet Running Shield on February 25, 1970 and were married for 55 years. Robert joined the United States Army on October 14, 1966 and did two tours during the Vietnam War earning his Sharpshooter Badge, National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars. Robert was honorably discharged on May 19, 1969. Robert worked as an OST Ranger and also served as a District Council Representative.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Phinet Red Owl; sons, Robert Dean Red Owl and Purvis Red Owl; daughters, Ann Red Owl, Bobbie Jo (Charlie) Pablo, and Josie Yellow Hair; adopted daughter, Freda Running Shield; grandchildren, Shaynna (Aaron Holder) Red Owl, Madison, Billy, Miracle, Savannah, & Roman Red Owl, Kaitlin Two Bulls, Garrett Two Bulls, Jr., Christopher Red Shirt, Lawrence & Brandy Shott, Daisha (Stevie Winn) Pablo, Winston & Edwin Winn, Charley & Grace Pablo, and Alleanna & Darius Miles; and numerous nieces & nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Red Owl & Nellie (One Feather) Red Owl; son, Billy Joe Red Owl; daughter, Baby Kaitlyn Red Owl; brothers, Curtis Red Owl, Harry Red Owl, and Darrell Red Owl; sisters, Vastana Two Lance, Fermina Quintana, Elizabeth Red Owl, and Gertrude Red Owl; and many loved ones that Robert has now joined in the Spirit World.
Pallbearers will be Wilson "Buzzy" Two Lance, Zach Quintana, Wilson "Shane" Quintana, Andrew "AJ" Slow Bear, Marcus Palmier, Charlie Pablo, Justin Garrett, Jamie LeBeau, Charlie Standing Bear, Steve Red Owl.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Wakpamni Lake Community, Rainbow Valley Community, Batesland Community, All Veterans, All Nieces & Nephews, and All Friends & Relatives.
Wake Services: One night wake service will start at 5:00 PM, Friday, August 15, 2025 at the Bill C. Bear Memorial Gymnasium in Batesland, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM with Military Roll Call to follow.
Funeral Services: 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 16, 2025 at the Bill C. Bear Memorial Gymnasium in Batesland, SD
Traditional Lakota Services: All Spiritual Leaders Welcome
Burial Services: 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 16, 2025 at the Lakota Freedom Veteran's Cemetery near Kyle, SD
Arrangements entrusted with the Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD
