Robert Eugene (Rob) Robinson Jr. was born in Augusta, GA, on December 31, 1940, to his parents Robert Eugene Robinson, Sr., and Shirley Payne Robinson. He was saved at Beaver Street Baptist Church at the age of 12. Rob went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 19, 2023, at 82 years of age. He passed away at the side of his beloved wife of 38 years.
Immediately after graduating from Paxon High School in Jacksonville, FL, Rob enlisted with the Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged after many years of service, which included one tour in the Vietnam War. Upon return, Rob served one year in the city of Jacksonville Public Utilities Department before re-enlisting as a Petty Officer Second Class (E-5) in the U.S. Navy. While in the U.S. Navy, he served a second tour in the Vietnam War, was trained in Quantico, VA as one of the country's first handlers in the U.S. Customs narcotic detect dog training program, served as a Master of Arms on the U.S.S. Saratoga, and worked alongside the NCIS naval investigation team at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. He retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) from the U.S. Navy in April of 1981. Throughout his 22-year military career, he served with honor.
Upon retiring from the military, he continued to work alongside NCIS in Jacksonville and returned to college, receiving an associate degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), then known as Florida Junior College (FJC) in Welding and Applied Sciences. He was employed as a maintenance supervisor for Paul Lewis Tire for 15 years before retiring to serve as caregiver, alongside his wife, for his mother, brother, and father-in-law.
For a brief time, Rob worked as a Rural Carrier Associate (RCA) for the United States Postal Service, yet he remained active in the FL Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, serving as a committee member, Vice-President, and ultimately President. Until his death he remained active in the auxiliary and in 2023, The Rob Robinson Scholarship was instituted in his honor to support the education of children and grandchildren of rural letter carriers in the state of Florida. He was awarded the FL Auxiliary Member of the Year.
Rob took a position at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville working in the shipping/receiving, electrical departments and ultimately at the FBC Retreat on US121 in Hilliard, FL. The last five years of his working career he was employed by the Nassau County Council on Aging as a transit driver. On Dec. 28, 2012, he and his wife Susan retired.
Rob loved motorcycles. He and his wife rode motorcycles and traveled extensively all over the United States. He was an active member in the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA), Jacksonville Chapter: Bikers for Christ since 1993, serving as President for 3 years. After moving to Hilliard, FL, he and his wife were founding members of the Sons of Thunder: Yulee Chapter #750.
Robert Eugene (Rob) Robinson, Jr. was predeceased in death by his father Robert Eugene Robinson Sr., his mother Shirley Payne Robinson, his brother Gary Colton Robinson, children Harvey Clayton (Clay) Robinson, Melissa Ann Robinson-Cook, Jerry Ray Prevatt, and John Randall Robinson and his granddaughter Stephanie Robinson. He is survived by his wife, Susan A. Robinson, his sons: retired Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, Robert E. (Rob) Mercer, and once a Marine, always a Marine, Norman R. (Jennifer) Robinson, his daughter Dr. Cynthia S. Robinson, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family visitation and memorial service will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Boulougne, 28226 Church Dr., Hilliard, FL, 32046. Family visitation will begin at 10:00am with the memorial service starting promptly at 11:00am. Pastor Paul Lucas will be officiating the ceremony. Burial will follow in Riverside Memorial Park.
