Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lewin Funeral Home - Fremont from Feb. 18 to Feb. 19, 2026.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Robert Frank Sasse, at the remarkable age of 98, on February 16, 2026. He lived a long and fulfilling life, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and love. Known for his unwavering dedication to his family and church, he touched the lives of many with his generosity and gentle spirit.
Robert was born on November 2, 1927, to Frank Sasse and Rhea Regel Sasse. He was raised on the family dairy farm and enjoyed all the benefits of country life including many happy hours hunting and fishing. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Christian faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in
Fremont, Wisconsin. He graduated in 1946 from Weyauwega High School where he was active in FFA, band, and bowling league. He went into the Army in 1950 and served two years during the Korean conflict, starting with training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was with the 370th Engineering Heavy Equipment 5th Army. He married Avis Popke on June 15, 1951, and they spent almost 75 wonderful years together. They had adventurous spirits and spent the first five years of their marriage traveling between Florida citrus groves and Glacier Park, Montana. He enjoyed his years employed by the Great Northern Railroad's Glacier Park Company. Later Robert worked as a construction superintendent and for Careage Corporation. In 1976 the company transferred him to St. George, Utah where he built the St. George Care Center. His other projects included everything from individual homes to nursing homes, hospitals, schools and municipal buildings, finishing his professional career with Tibesar Construction Company of Las Vegas, Nevada in 1992. He enjoyed his work so much he often said he never felt like he worked a day in his life. Robert was a gifted woodworker, carpenter, and artist. Many family members and friends cherish the treasures he made for them. He could and did fix anything and everything. Robert loved cars and could name every make and model made. He remembered time and people by the cars they drove. He spent many hours lovingly restoring a 1935 Ford like one his family had owned. In his spare time, he enjoyed exploring the country, finding abandoned mines and ghost towns, watching wild horses, and just absorbing the beautiful scenery.
Throughout his years, he cherished moments with his loved ones, always offering support, guidance, and warmth. His stories, laughter, and wisdom will forever echo in our hearts. We mourn his loss, but we also celebrate the extraordinary life he led and the countless memories we hold dear.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George Sasse. He is survived by his wife, Avis Sasse; sister Vera (George) Zimmer; children: Scott (Bonnie) Sasse, Janine (Mark) Englert, and Kalyn (Bryce) Frei; grandchildren: Cody (Alexandria) Englert, Kaitlyn (Kristopher) Clark, Eric (Kayci) Sasse, Laura Sasse, Mikayla Frei, and great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Jesse Englert, Thaddeus Clark, and Caleb Roffey (Sasse).
Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2260 East Red Cliffs Drive, St. George, Utah at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 21, 2026, with full military honors, officiated by the Reverend John Manweiler. Burial will take place March 7, 2026, at Wolf River Cemetery,
