Bob was born March 26, 1928, in
Wathena, Kansas, to Nicholas Joseph Shalz and Esther (Dyer) Shalz. He passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and faithful servant of God.
A lifelong member of the Catholic faith, Bob's relationship with the Lord was the foundation of his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, stationed on Guam. Following his military service, he dedicated 34 years of hard work to Armour's as a butcher, providing faithfully for his family.
On October 27, 1951, he married the love of his life, Velma A. Snodgrass. They shared 40 years of marriage until her passing in 1992. Together they built a home centered on faith, love, and family.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Velma; his son, Tim Shalz; his son-in-law, Raymond Atha; his great-granddaughter, Tess Marie Atha; siblings, Joan Williams and Lester Shalz; and special companion, Patricia Smith.
He is survived by his children: Mary (Gary) Ott; Patti Atha; Robin (Mark) Eliot; Bobby (Robin) Shalz; and Teresa (Tom) McClain; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and bonus daughter, Susie Smith Galvan, who carry forward his legacy of love and devotion to family.
After retirement, Bob continued serving others, volunteering at St. Francis Xavier and The House of Bread. His faith was not only something he believed - it was something he lived.
He loved boating and cherished the many family vacations spent at the Lake of the Ozarks. The laughter, stories, and time spent together on the water created memories that will live on for generations. His love for the lake became a gift he passed down, as children and grandchildren continue to gather and make memories by the water - just as he taught them.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Maxine Everett, his wonderful caregiver over the last 6 years and who has become a treasured family member. Special thanks are also given to Bree, Karen, Kelsey, and Danielle, whose generous care and compassion meant so much in his final days. The family is deeply grateful to Mike Caruso, who tenderly and faithfully cared for Bob's spiritual needs, and to Mosaic Hospice, whose phenomenal care and guidance brought comfort and peace during his transition.
His steady presence, strong work ethic, deep faith, and love for family will remain a guiding light to all who knew him.
A private family ceremony will be held at St. Francis Xavier. In keeping with his wishes, memorials may be made to your
charity of choice, St. Francis Xavier, The House of Bread, through the offering of Masses, or by praying the rosary. Online guest book and obituary at www.meierhoffer.com.
