Robert (Rob) Allison Shirley passed away on Saturday, September 6th, 2025, in Ludington, Michigan. Rob was born in Raymond, Washington on October 8, 1954. Rob is survived and deeply missed by his mother, Arlene L. Shirley in California and his sister, Karen M. Houston in Texas. His memory will live on in his six nieces and nephews, Carissa Garibay, Tina Garibay, Nikole Houston, Brandon Houston, Shelby Houston and Robert Houston, and an abundance of great and great-great nieces and nephews. Rob is the oldest of 4 children and is preceded in death by 2 of his siblings, his brother Thomas A. Shirley and sister Terry L. Wiedeman. He is also predeceased by his father Robert L. Shirley.
After graduating from Atwater High School in 1972, Rob left his childhood home and moved to Yosemite National Park to work and explore the great outdoors. He then found that he loved the big city life and moved to San Franciso and then to New York City. Later in life he went back to more natural surroundings working outside and creating and maintaining beautiful gardens.
Rob was a free spirit that loved to travel. Some of the countries he visited were Turkey, Spain, Mexico, Italy and Morocco. Rob made friends everywhere he went. He loved to go to musical events and entertain with friends. He had friends from all over the world and of all ages and backgrounds.
Rob was also a very talented artist. His passion for art started during his childhood with many of his teachers admiring his talent and encouraging him to paint and sketch. He had some of his artwork purchased by others and displayed in small New York City galleries.
Rob was also a bit exotic as was shown in his pet boa constrictor that he had in New York City. He’s had normal pets, like a cat, as well.
Rob’s ashes will be sent to his mother in California and then spread in Yosemite National Park by his family. Rob was much loved by his family and friends and will be dearly missed by all.
