Robert Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lowe's Funeral Home - Helena on Mar. 14, 2026.
Robert Eugene Smith

Saturday, July 21, 1956 – Thursday, March 12, 2026

Robert Eugene Smith, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, at Community Hospice in Vidalia, Georgia. He was born on July 21, 1956, in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina to the late Homer Lee Smith and Odessa Connell Smith. Robert's life was a testament to his enduring love for his family, his passion for the great outdoors, and his remarkable skill as a craftsman.

A funeral service will be held at Mt. Galilee Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Royce Hulett officiating. Interment will follow at Clements Cemetery. The family will visit with friends at Lowes Funeral Home on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.

In his youth, Robert discovered his lifelong love for hunting, fishing, and camping. These passions were only matched by his enthusiasm for working on cars, particularly antique models, and his talent for upholstery and refinishing old furniture. His hands were rarely still, as he was always found tinkering, restoring, and bringing new life to forgotten treasures.

After completing his education, Robert enlisted in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he began a career in upholstery, where he was proudly self-employed for many years. His meticulous work and attention to detail earned him respect and admiration within the community. He was a man who took great pride in his craft, and his legacy can be seen in the countless pieces of furniture that he lovingly restored over the years.

Above all, Robert was a family man. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sylvia H. Smith of Jacksonville, and their children: Suzzanne Smith Gills of Helena, Homer Smith of McRae, Lora Smith of Sparks, Kristen Smith of Douglas, and Tyson Smith of Jacksonville. Robert's life was further enriched by his grandchildren: Brennen Weaver, Cameron Weaver, Noah Smith, Caryn Smith, Graham Smith, Mirabella Smith, Chloe Smith, Jai Smith, Lyrica Smith, and Teresa Smith. Each grandchild held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Gail Ridings of McAlpin, Florida, Linda Jones (Charlie), and Nora Helman (John), all of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his grandchild Izella Smith, his brother Leroy Smith, and his parents, Homer and Odessa Smith.

Robert's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire those he left behind. His legacy of love, craftsmanship, and adventure will endure for generations to come.
