Robert Squillante Obituary

Dr. Robert Gabriel Squillante, Jr.

Dr. Robert Gabriel Squillante, Jr. "Dr. Bob", 62, a remarkable orthopedic spine surgeon whose dedication and work ethic touched countless lives, passed away unexpectedly on July 2, 2023, leaving behind a world forever changed by his compassionate care. In his final moments, he donned his beloved Miami Dolphins jersey, reflecting his passion for both his favorite team and football. Growing up in Hollywood, Florida, Bob's parents paved the way for his journey through life. From an early age, he displayed an unwavering commitment to work and caring for his loved ones. Throughout high school and college, Robert worked a variety of jobs, from bagging groceries to parking cars for wealthy executives. It was during these formative years that he acquired an unbreakable work ethic, an attribute that would define his career.

After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Bob embarked on a new venture as a futures trader in Miami, showcasing his sharp intellect and business acumen. However, his true calling awaited him in the world of medicine. Driven by his insatiable desire to make a meaningful impact, he began his studies at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, followed by a residency at University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in spine surgery at Cornell's hospital for Special Surgery. After numerous years of study, he embarked on a career as an orthopedic spine surgeon at Fredericksburg Orthopedic Associates in Fredericksburg, Virginia. There, his remarkable skill and unwavering dedication transformed lives, alleviating pain and restoring mobility for his patients at Mary Washington Hospital.

While Bob's professional achievements were undoubtedly remarkable, his brilliance was matched by his down-to-earth nature and sense of humor. For many years he enjoyed hosting fund raiser events for various charities with his wife, Joni at the Oaks, their historic home in Richmond. In the realm of parenting, where responsibility and routine often take center stage, Bob dared to embrace his inner child and play alongside his children with unrivaled enthusiasm. Other parents may have sent their children out to the yard to play, Bob dove headfirst into the world of make-believe and imaginative adventures weaving lifetime lessons. No beach trip was complete without Bob joining his children and their cousins in the playful embrace of the ocean's waves and digging holes in the sand.

Bob's love for learning and sharing knowledge was evident throughout his life. From a young age, he devoured newspapers cover to cover, keeping himself abreast of current events. His daily walks served as opportunities to engage family members with his captivating tales and enlightening discussions on the books he had read and current events. In his retirement years he cherished his time with his sisters who he loved dearly and parlayed his adolescent pranks into competing with them in his annual Squillante Family Olympics. In retirement, he also enjoyed connecting with friends and classmates from various phases of his life. His generosity of intellect fostered a deeper connection with his loved ones, allowing them to grow alongside him.

Dr. Bob's unexpected passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. Yet, his legacy of excellence, intellectual curiosity and childlike spirit will forever guide and inspire us. As we bid farewell to a cherished husband, father, brother, friend, let us remember the immeasurable impact he had on the lives he touched. May his soul find eternal peace.

Bob was predeceased by his mother, Catherine Ann Squillante and his father, Robert Gabriel Squillante, Sr. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joan Bellefield Davis; his son, Nicholas Squillante; daughters, Catherine Squillante, Julia Squillante and Lily Goodman; sisters, Alice Leone (Steve) and Jane King; his lifetime friend, Robert Taylor; a faithful dog, Mike, and numerous friends and family members.

On Tuesday, July 11, 2023,, the final viewing and visitation will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. and the service will be held at 2 p.m. at Bliley's Funeral home, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, VA 23230. After the service, a celebration of life will be held at The Boathouse in Rocketts Landing, 4708 E. Old Main Street Richmond, VA 23231 (VALET PARKING AVAILABLE). In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to ACTS, 1518 Willow Lawn Dr Ste 201, Richmond, VA 23230, https://actsrva.org/.

Dr. Squillante: First I want to give my condolences to his family. I just found out about his passing. Second, he was the best neck surgeon ever! A little cocky but I was assured my surgery would go well. It's been over ten years and I am feeling the best I have prior to my surgery. He will truly be missed.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Squillante's passing. He performed 4 spinal surgeries on me, and one on my elderly Mother---all were successes and gave us a better quality of life. He helped me and stood by me during a trying workman's comp. case. I missed him greatly when he retired. I just found out about his passing, and send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends on this great loss.

Dr. Squillante was an excellent doctor that I had all of the confidence in the world. He performed 9 surgeries over the years on my neck and back. He was always thorough with his treatment options and at the end I would ask him can you fix me and his reply was always YES and he did. He is responsible for giving me my mobility to live the life I have had and I owe him GREAT gratitude of thanks. Yes, he was not only my doctor but I considered him a friend. My prayers are with the entire Squillante family as he will be missed by all!

Dr. Squillante treated me for shoulder pain. He gave me a steroid injection in my left shoulder. What really impressed me was him calling me the next day personally to check to see how I was doing. God bless you Dr. Squillante. Soar with the angels.

Doc Bob, You fixed my spine 4 times. You did great all four times but Arthritis would not let you win. My spine just kept falling apart. I would feel great for a year or two and than it would go bad. It was a train wreak in progress. I thank you for all the good years. You were a great Doc and a good friend. You will be missed by a;; who knew you. RIP.

I met Bob at the gym around 5 years ago...It was before he and I both retired. He heard me talking about my own back issues and introduced himself and gave me lots of advice...We became friends and spent hours talking and sharing lifelong stories. Mainly his exciting adventures throughout his life...I would see him every few days and we would talk...I enjoyed our conversations, and we became good friends... I haven't seen him over the last few months, but I figured he was traveling...I will really miss him...May peace be with the family...He was a good man....

Needless to say, I was in total shock when I heard this heartbreaking news!

I was one of his first patients when he came to Fredericksburg. My initial appointment was around 2 hours long and he informed me of everything that was wrong with my back. Just from our first conversation, I could see what a compassionate person he was, so I knew he was the doctor for me.

In 1995 I had a ruptured disk and was barely walking. After that surgery, I was walking like a champ. I was beyond happy! To show just how excited I was, I brought him and his nurse Charlotte both flowers. Charlotte said that as long as she had been a nurse, she had never received flowers from a patient. She would always say that she was old enough to be Bob´s mother and we all had a good laugh about it! I also made cookies for them every Christmas.

Bob would take care of me for all my problems with my back, knee and personal things. I continued to see him for three more surgeries up until his retirement. We had such a bond, that we could finish each other´s sentences. I considered Bob my guardian angel. I was going through a lot of personal issues and he got me the help I needed. I wouldn´t be here today if it wasn´t for Bob.

Unfortunately I can´t be there to say a final goodbye and let him know what a wonderful doctor and friend he was to me. May he Rest In Peace, and know that he will be greatly missed.

My condolences go out to his entire family. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten!

Love to all of you.

Deepest condolences to the Squillante family. My husband was Dr. Squillante's first patient in Fredericksburg. He waited three weeks for him to get to the area. He did several surgeries on him and he is the reason he had a better quality of life. Dr. Squillante R.I.P.

So loved Dr. Squillante and he will be missed greatly. He did a fusion on my lumbar spine as well as facet joint cleanup to help with damage from a MRSA spinal abscess without which I would likely be wheelchair-bound. He was always very straightforward about what to expect and I always looked forward to seeing and talking to him as I could rely on his knowledge without a second thought. My deepest condolences on his loss.

Dr. Squillante did my neck surgery over 20 years ago, and I've been pain free ever since. He was incredibly understanding when I first came to him with a ruptured disc, and added an extra surgery on a Friday evening to accommodate me. His caring, expertise and support impressed upon me what treating the whole patient looks like. An incredible human...my sincere condolences to his family and friends. He changed my life.

Dr Squillante operated on my neck 2 different times and alleviated terrible pain and loss of movement in my right arm. I was a smoker at the time and he told me not to worry about the surgeries but if anything he wanted me to stop smoking. So his hands cured me and I stopped smoking for him. God bless him and his family!

When I was 38 I had paralyzing back pain from ruptured disc. Dr. Bob did my surgery and have had the last 23 years of mobility. Everyone that has seen Xray´s on my back has said what an excellent job he had done on my back. I am so blessed that most of that time until recently, I have been basically out of pain and mobility has been great. When I was going through this my husband at the time had left me I met a wonderful man who went through the last of my three surgeries with me and married, I think Dr. Bob so much for giving me the life that I have been leading all these years . God bless him.
