Robert J. Stansfield, affectionately known to many as "Stansy," a distinguished attorney, creative spirit, and a true legend of the Utah golf community, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, in Sandy, Utah, at the age of 86. He was born on May 16, 1939.

A proud native of Utah, Robert attended Westminster College, where he demonstrated his athletic talent playing for the men's basketball team on scholarship. He went on to earn his law degree from the University of Utah. Robert was known for being incredibly witty and sharp-minded. He possessed a keen intellect and a love for debate, making his four decades in law a perfect fit-he truly loved to argue. For over 40 years, he faithfully practiced, beginning his career in the district attorney's office before transitioning to his own highly-regarded private practice. During his distinguished career, he also served as a member of one of the rotating disciplinary screening panels for the Utah State Bar, underscoring his dedication to the ethical standards of his profession. He was respected by peers and clients alike and was renowned as a "gentleman's gentleman."

Beyond his professional life, Robert was a talented writer whose poetry was deeply important to him. He took great pride in having his poems bound in a book to share with family and friends. A cherished memory for him was when a close golf acquaintance put his poetry to music. He also enjoyed spending time in nature, dabbling in photography, and playing all types of games, including bridge, chess, and word games. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, creating decades of cherished memories during their annual vacations to Island Park, Idaho.

Robert's first and true love was the game of golf. He was a dedicated member of Alpine Country Club for an incredible 53 years, a tenure that earned him the title of "Alpine royalty." His passion extended far beyond the fairway; he volunteered countless hours to the club, serving as Club President, sitting on the Board of Directors, and generously offering free legal advice to his fellow members. His competitive spirit led to significant accomplishments on the course, including winning the Senior Championship. Stansy will also be remembered for a particularly successful round where he shot an impressive 64.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Connie Stansfield, and his former wife of 25 years, Sandra Ray, with whom he remained a close friend.

He is survived by his loving sister, Linda (Joe) Coccimiglio, and his devoted daughters, Jeri Carver, Deborah (Anthony) Roberts, and Rebecca (Mitchell) Chandler. He is also survived by his beloved companion of the last 13 years, Julia Brisk. Robert's legacy continues through his eight beloved grandchildren: Linsy, Levi, Mcinsy, Austin, Paige, Cooper, and Maggie, and his 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert's Final Advice (for those who choose to listen)

"Save and invest immediately. Everyone can put something away if they will exercise a little discipline. Initially, the amount will seem insignificant. But as time rolls on, the increase in value will astound you. But you must start now with the building blocks. And if your employment involves the opportunity to invest in a 401(k), do the maximum possible, particularly if there are any matching funds. Where else can you find free money? (Do without one toy if necessary.)"
