Robert Anthony Steele, 83, of Canton, Ohio, passed away on March 2, 2026, at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He was surrounded by his four loving daughters, Alice, Shearee, Star, and Teleise.
Robert was born on August 13, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Bennie L. and Susie (nee Brooks) Steele. Robert was the youngest of two boys.
Robert was a 1960 graduate of Washington High School, and was a Massillon Tiger’s football player. His teammates affectionately referred to him as “rabbit”, both on and off the field. A proud veteran, Robert served honorably in the United States Army. After his military service, he worked diligently as a machinist for the Timken Roller Bearing Company, and retired after 32 years, contributing his skilled craftsmanship to the community. He loved fishing, perfecting his dance moves, and his scratch off lottery tickets. Anybody who knew him knows he would have scratch off tickets laying around somewhere! Robert’s sense of humor and strong smiling demeanor will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Robert leaves behind his adoring daughters, Alice Glenn, Shearee Glenn, Star Glenn (Jerome) and Teleise Ingram (Percy), who served as his devoted caretakers following the passing of his wife, Mary (nee Glenn) Steele. Robert will also be missed by his two sisters, Caroline Johnson Groce of Canton, Ohio, and Gloria Steele of Massillon, Ohio, and a host of many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Robert is preceded in death by his brother, Jessie Steele, of Massillon, Ohio, and two sisters, Mary Keys of Massillon, Ohio, and Amie Sheegog of Victorville, California.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 10 AM – 12 PM, at Paquelet Funeral Home, 1100 Wales Rd. NE, Massillon, Ohio, where funeral services will promptly take place at 12 PM. Interment with full military honors in Evergreen Memorial Gardens will immediately follow.
