On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the heavens received a unique soul and our favorite music man. Robert "Paul" Steward embodied a life of wit, melody, and perseverance. He brought chuckles with his humor, comfort through his music, and inspiration with his steadfast heart.

Paul was born on January 5, 1933, in Worthington, Indiana, the youngest of three children to Robert Franklin Steward and Roberta Frances (Dalton) Steward. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mary Dee Burt (William) and Polly Mead (Marvin).

While attending Indiana State University to study music, Paul met the love of his life, Marilyn Laura (Wesner). He served as Vice-President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national music honorary for men, and went on to earn a Master's in Education. Paul and Marilyn married in 1956 at Newberry United Methodist Church. Shortly afterward, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as the Chaplain's Assistant in Whittier, Alaska.

Paul began his professional life teaching music at Odon, Jasper, and Lincoln (Vincennes) High Schools. He later transitioned into higher education, serving as the Director of Financial Aid at Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology until his retirement in 1994. In recognition of his service and contributions, he was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O'Bannon in March 1997.

Paul and Marilyn shared many joys throughout their marriage: antiquing, entertaining family and friends, singing in the church choir, and playing euchre. A weaver of rag rugs and a lover of life on the go, Paul thrived when surrounded by people.

A gifted pianist, Paul brightened countless lives by playing for nursing home residents, church services, and played the Rose-Hulman calliope in local parades. He never met a stranger - his open heart, helpful hands, and endless humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Marilyn; children, Jeanne Coy, Jeffrey Steward (Susan), Sarah Pesavento (Anthony), and Matthew Steward (Brenda); nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; six step-great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Glenburn Home in Linton, Indiana; the Southern Care & Gentiva hospice teams; members of Linton First United Methodist Church; and the many friends and loved ones who uplifted Paul through his most challenging days.

Funeral service will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 12:00 PM (noon) on Monday, August 11, 2025, with Rev. Jack Shake, Rev. Kathy Ottinger, and Nyle Riegle officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Lyons.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 PM, and Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Linton First United Methodist Church in Paul's honor. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Would really like to know if any of Robert's performances on the Rose-Hulman calliope have been recorded and might be available. Calliope's are a unique segment of the music spectrum and I'm trying to maintain and grow it for future generations.

Marilyn, I just learned of Paul's death. Our thoughts are with you. We enjoyed the times we chatted with both of you at the Elnora Power Show.
Also remember the the Hasler/Wesner reunions we used to attend.
In our prayers...David and June (Soliday) Owen
