Robert Tantillo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller Funeral Services - Houston on Mar. 4, 2026.
Robert "Bob" Joseph Tantillo, 84, passed away peacefully at home on February 14, 2026.

A dedicated husband to the love of his life, Mary Ann, and a devoted father to his son, Matthew, he also faithfully served his community for decades as an educator and volunteer.

Born January 14, 1942, in Galveston, Texas, he was the younger of two children born to Nicholas Joseph Tantillo, a claim adjuster for the Santa Fe Railroad, and Martha "Mickey" Ometra Mitchell, a homemaker.

He attended Kirwin High School, where he enjoyed band, glee club, and senior play. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1963 to 1965, stationed in Thailand. He then attended University of Houston, tutoring elementary students and working at a printing company, the university bookstore, and the United Fund before earning a bachelor of arts in 1970. He started his master's degree in education at the University of St. Thomas in Houston and completed it at University of Houston in 1974, with a focus on guidance and counseling.

Bob dedicated his professional life to education. After working as a substitute teacher in Houston ISD, he began his full-time teaching career at Sharpstown Senior High School, where he taught history, government, and English from 1974 to 1980 and was the first educator to teach psychology, helping establish the subject in HISD's curriculum.

He believed deeply in the potential of every student and worked tirelessly to remove barriers to learning. As a longtime instructor with HISD's Community Services program from 1980 to 2008, he drove to students' homes and hospital rooms to provide one-on-one instruction in ninth through 12th grades, helping many earn their high school diplomas who might otherwise have fallen behind. His steady encouragement and belief in second chances changed lives.

His greatest devotion was to his wife, Mary Ann Willett Tantillo. They met at a church coffee social and were married on August 7, 1976. For 42 years, they built a life grounded in faith, partnership, and love, a bond that endured beyond her passing in 2018. They welcomed their son, Matthew, in February 1978, and Bob embraced fatherhood with curiosity and joy. He made the world their classroom-frequenting museums and libraries, raising animals together, and steadfastly supporting Matthew's interests. In later years, father and son shared a cherished ritual of weekly lunches, often over burgers and milkshakes.

Bob retired in 2008. He enjoyed gardening, art, and reading and was a devoted Catholic known for his generosity and quiet acts of service. Whether volunteering at church or driving neighbors to medical appointments, he was always ready to help. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and compassion.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Willett Tantillo; sister, Mary Ann Moritz; cousin, Esther Montalbano Cavaleri; and nephew, Keith Burks.

He is survived by his son, Matthew Thomas Tantillo; cousin, Julie Hummel; niece, Kim Burks and family; nephew Brian Burks and family; close friends Carl and Penny Linsey; and many close friends and neighbors.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. March 19 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 8200 Roos Road, Houston, Texas 77036.

A Rite of Committal will be held at 11 a.m. March 20 at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7801 Gulf Freeway, Dickinson, Texas 77539.
