Bruce McEwen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heritage Cremation & Burial Society - Greater Canton Area on Mar. 4, 2026.
Bruce Eldon McEwen (86) passed away on Sunday, March 1st, 2026, after a long illness.

Bruce was born on October 16th, 1939, in Akron, Ohio. He attended Case Western Reserve University and graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Houston. He then served in the US Navy on a Destroyer Escort in the North Atlantic. He married the love of his life, Christina Lynn Helvick, on October 4th, 1966. Together they raised three daughters, Karen, Sandra, and Heather.

Bruce was an electrical engineer who co-owned his own company and was able to retire early to pursue his many interests.

Bruce always had a camera in his hand so it's a treat to find him in a photograph. He loved going up to the lake (Lake Erie, that is), while terrorizing his kids with stories about the Lake Erie Monster.

After retirement he took up genealogy for 30 years, researching thousands of possible family ancestors. He and Mom loved long drives in the countryside and traveling around the United States with the family. Bruce was always interested in learning new things, whether that be trying a new recipe, baking bread or reading about new discoveries in science and astronomy. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was generous and honest and lived his life with integrity and respect for others. He will be dearly missed.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christina McEwen (nee Helvick), his brother Jon McEwen (Susan) and three daughters, Karen McEwen (Josh Farthing, deceased), Sandra McEwen (Warren Marshall), and Heather Vidmar-McEwen (Michael) as well as his four grandchildren. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents Gladys Eldean and Mary Margaret McEwen (nee Kopchek), and his beloved sister Patricia Dangerfield.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 19th, at Middleburg Heights Community Church. Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m., with the service at 3:00 p.m. followed by a wake.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to your favorite charity in Bruce's honor.
