Robert Joseph Thompson, fondly called Bob; passed away peacefully on September 27th, 2025, surrounded by his loving brothers and sisters in his childhood home in the North Fair Oaks neighborhood of Menlo Park, California. He was 63 years young.
Born on November 1, 1961, Robert was the beloved son of the late James and Margaret Thompson. His father, James, was born in Los Angeles and raised in San Francisco, and his mother, Margaret also known as Rita, grew up in Castleisland, County Kerry, Ireland. He is preceded in death by his parents and lovingly remembered by his surviving siblings: John, Barry, and Kevin Thompson; Karen Boatright; and Maureen Giusti. He also leaves behind his cherished Aunt and god mother Mary Gawley-Gomes and, many nieces and nephews-Andrea Cheng, James Boatright, Maryanne Delgado, Christine Thompson, Ryan and Megan Thompson, Jacob, Luca, and Bella Giusti, as well as numerous cousins, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Bob had a heart full of generosity and a mind filled with curiosity. He had a gift for sharing - about his escapades growing up and was a walking encyclopedia about music of the 70's, a passion he carried throughout his life. Bob could name almost any band, song, or album from that era with ease and sing it too! His favorites songs represented hope and longing for special times with his family, some of his favorites songs that we will cherish are: With a little luck- Paul McCartney and Wings, Welcome Back Kotter- John Sebastian, Beth- Kiss, and I'd Really Love to see you tonight- by England Dan & John Ford-Coley; and many more of his favorites like Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Tom Petty, and The Brothers Johnson.
Growing up in Menlo Park, Bob lived a full life rooted in the joy of simple pleasures. He enjoyed Coca-Cola, sour cream and onion potato chips, playing pinball, pool, and jumping on the pogo stick for hours! Bob loved to eat and he would say things like- Let's get some real food! I want KFC or tacos from Jack in the Box! Got any sour cream and onion chips and a coke? How about a Pepsi?
Bob had a deep competitive streak and was known as a great pitcher. In Little League, Bob's intimidating fastball became his signature, earning him a reputation on the mound his siblings, friends and other teams recalled with fear and admiration. Halloween was his domain; he couldn't wait, but our Mom said she was thankful he wasn't born on October 31st and that he waited until November 1st; a day in the Catholic tradition to celebrate the saints that have been promoted to heaven! For Bob Halloween was mostly about the thrill of getting the most candy; no one could gather more or hustle harder than Bob. He also found ways to earn money, i.e. mowing lawns, selling persimmons, apples and lemons from the trees in our yard and collecting recyclables and anything else he could put his hands to; there was never a task he couldn't master when he set his mind to it.
Bob found so much joy in family above all else, even when his health was failing he would say How are you doing? I'm good today's going to be a good day! Bob shared a very special bond with his mother, Rita, he called her everyday to tell her he loved her. He said many times "I know I'm Mom and Dad's favorite." Bob always said Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday and being with all of his family brought him the greatest happiness, and his generosity and awe for life touched every one around him. He often gave money away and food to those in the nursing facility and strangers he would meet, he would say they don't get visitor's like me."
Robert's warmth, sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those who loved him. His legacy lives on in the stories, laughter, and love of his family.
