Robert Alfred Tolar

Robert Alfred Tolar, Colonel, US Army (Ret.), age 97, of Young Harris, Georgia passed away Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Robert was born December 26, 1924 in Young Harris, Georgia to the late Sampson and Florence (Hudgens) Tolar. He received a Bachelor of Science at West Point Military Academy at West Point, New York. Robert served in the United States Army for thirty years as an infantryman. During that time, he served in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. He enjoyed carpentry work and built his home in Young Harris, Georgia. He also liked to paint and tend his garden.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elisabeth (Zeiler) Tolar; brother, Sampson B. Tolar Jr.; sister, Melicent Hull. He is survived in death by his son, Frederick (Sharon) Tolar; daughter, Sharon (Thomas) McDonough; grandchildren, Jason Tolar, Travis Tolar, Matthew McDonough, Tara Hicks, Anna Harris; great-grandchildren; Victoria Harris, Vivian Tolar, Patrick Tolar, Eleanore Tolar, Thomas McDonough III, Sophia McDonough, Eli McDonough.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Visitation: Saturday, August 27, 2022 from 11:30am-1:00pm at Banister-Cooper Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 1:00pm at Banister-Cooper Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Old Union Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Matt McDonough, Tom McDonough, Travis Tolar, Jason Tolar, Aaron Hicks and Charles Harris.
