Robert Verhines Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hughey Funeral Home on Dec. 24, 2025.
Robert Carter Verhines, 64, of Mount Vernon, IL, passed away in a house fire at his residence on December 21, 2025. He was born February 08, 1961 in Los Angeles, CA to Don Verhines Sr. and Shirley (Moseley) Verhines.
Robert is survived by his Mother, Shirley Verhines; Daughter, Miriam Owen; Grandchildren, Kane and Cammille; Siblings, Don (Nancy) Verhines Jr, Bill Verhines, Donna (Scott) Verhines-Chadbourne, Nancy (Dale) Flick, and Linda (Steve) Scoville; Aunt, Mary Wheeler, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his father Don Verhines Sr.
After graduating with his Juris Doctorate Degree from SIU-C in 1985, Bob was a long-time attorney serving in the capacity of Assistant State's Attorney in Marion and Jefferson Counties, and as Public Defender in White and Jefferson Counties until his retirement. Bob graduated from Mt. Vernon, IL High School in 1979. He was a member of the first Mt. Vernon High Wrestling team in 1977. He played football for the Rams holding several weight lifting records for a number of years. Bob was also a member of the FCA in High School. Bob was of the Christian faith and was baptized in October, 1969 at Logan Street Baptist Church.
Bob was a compassionate person with a very giving heart, especially for people whose life circumstances were less than favorable. If Bob knew of a need, he would do all that he could to meet the need. The most satisfying aspect of Bob's attorney responsibilities was providing legal counsel for adoption assistance and placement. Bob was extremely intelligent, and could connect with anyone in ways that made all feel welcomed in his presence.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
There will be a private family/friends memorial gathering at a later date.
The family would like to thank the Mt. Vernon Fire Department and all the First Responders, Doctors and Nurses who attempted to help Bob during this tragedy.
