Robert A. “Bob” Walters, age 94, of Glen Mills formerly of Newtown Square, PA, passed away surrounded by his family on March 4, 2024.
Born in Rosedale, NY, Bob was the son of the late Andrew J. and Isabelle (Hudson) Walters. He was a graduate of Saint Francis College in Brooklyn, NY where he studied history with the intention of becoming a teacher.
He served as a Merchant Marine after World War 2, and while on leave, he attended a novena mass where he met the love of his life, Anne (Feranchuk)—a match that he said was “made in heaven.” They were married on June 6, 1953, and they spent 58 wonderful years together before she passed away in June 2011. Together they raised five children: Kathie Goldy (Ken), Michael Walters (Vicki),Sue Baumeister (Fred), Patty Leever (Dave), and the late Robert A. Walters. Bob was also the proud grandfather of Kristen, Kimberly, Rebecca, Emily, Luke, Logan, Brittany, Brandon, Brianna, Brooke, Lauren, Dylan, and Tabytha, and the caring great-grandfather of Maverick, Wells, and Charlie-Anne. He is survived by his many nieces and nephews. Throughout his life, Bob’s family was his top priority, and he offered his love, wisdom, and support unconditionally. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family—whether it was down the shore on Long Beach Island or going to his grandkids’ plays and concerts. Bob is predeceased by his siblings Andrew, Raymond, Isabella, and William.
Bob’s love for history and stories began as a boy when he and his brother Andy befriended a hobo named Slim who traveled on the Long Island Railroad. Slim’s tale inspired a lifelong interest in people’s histories, which Bob continued to collect throughout his life. If you were lucky, Bob--a skilled raconteur—would share these stories with you.
Although he intended to become a history teacher after graduating from St. Francis College and continued his studies at Columbia University, life had other plans for him. His beloved Anne became pregnant, and the need for an income put an end to that career path but created a new one with General Motors. Bob began his career repossessing cars in the dark alleys of New York, but he quickly rose in rank due to his great charm, intelligence, and dedication. Throughout the years, and with many promotions, he ultimately rose to the title of General Branch Manager of GMAC in Newtown Square. He declined another promotion that would have sent him to Missouri based solely on his family’s wishes. However, Bob’s love of history never died. He and Anne spent many years attending the Lincoln Forum in Gettysburg, and they both developed a passion for auctions and antiquing which they ultimately passed down to their children and grandchildren.
He was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, and he enjoyed making people laugh. His family will always remember this man who was full of life, laughter, love, and wisdom—a legacy that will be carried on to his future generations.
