Robert "Bob" Lee Weikle, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at his home in Newnan, Georgia. He was born February 17, 1938, in Pawnee City, Nebraska, as the eldest of five children to the late Ernest Lee Weikle and Margaret Thompson Weikle. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mieko Imaizumi Weikle, his two children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Bob enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 17 and served his country for 20 years. He rose to the rank of Senior Master Sargeant, where he traveled extensively to countries in the Far East and was stationed at numerous bases in the United States. He participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis and served in Vietnam. His last duty station was George Air Force Base in Victorville, California.
Bob and his family settled in California, where following his Air Force career, he managed a TG&Y store. He later served in many roles in the Apple Valley School District in Hesperia, California, culminating with him being named Superintendent of Facilities and Transportation.
Following retirement from the school district, Bob and his wife Mieko joined their son's family in Sharpsburg, Georgia in 2010. Bob enjoyed spending time with his children and grandkids, fishing, shopping estate sales, gardening, taking daily walks, meeting neighbors, hiking and exploring, and enjoying his extended family. Bob was a great friend in his community, and he will be fondly remembered.
Bob will be interred at the Georgia National Cemetery with full military honors.
Along with is parents, Bob is preceded in death by his four siblings, Dwain Weikle (Joyce), James Weikle (Barbara), Ernest L. Weikle, Jr. (Pat), and Shirley Weikle Weskirchen (Jim). Bob is survived by his son, Edward Lee Weikle (Laura) of Sharpsburg, GA, and Mary Ann Weikle Wolsing of Newnan, GA; and grandchildren Manissa DeWitt of Escondido, CA; Ryan Heathcock of Cincinnati, OH; Carly Weikle of Chicago, IL; Samuel Weikle of Medford, MA; and Emma Weikle of Sharpsburg, GA; and great-grandchildren, Tyler DeWitt and Miya Romero of Escondido, CA.
The family will host a celebration of Bob's life at their home in Newnan on Saturday, May 18th from 1-3 p.m., friends and neighbors are welcome. Contact McKoon for details.
