Roderick MacKinnon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. - Middletown on Feb. 9, 2026.
Roderick M. MacKinnon Sr., known affectionately as Rod to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, after a short illness. Born on September 1, 1938, in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, Rod's life journey came to a gentle end at Garnett Medical Center in Middletown, New York. surrounded by the warmth of his family.

He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

After proudly serving his country in the United States Army stationed at Fort Bragg from 1959 to 1962, he returned to civilian life to run several small businesses. In 1973, Rod became the owner of Golz Enterprises, Inc. He was very dedicated to all his customers.

Rod was a devoted husband to Darlene Jolivette MacKinnon, his partner in life for 68 years. Survived by their children, Kim Lemmings and her husband Mike, Peggy Blake and her husband Ed, and Roderick M. MacKinnon Jr. His humor was gifts he shared with his grandchildren, Freddie Kemp III, Karen Sullivan, Garrett Kemp, Emily Stokes, Roderick MacKinnon III, and Chelsea Munkelt, as well as his four great-grandchildren, who will carry his legacy forward.

Beyond his family, he was Fire Commissioner at the Washington Heights Fire Department, where he served with distinction and a deep sense of responsibility.

Rod's interests were a reflection of his personality. He found joy in working and tinkering around the house, always with a project in the works. His presence was a familiar sight at Maddy's Diner in Middletown, where he was a frequent patron, known for his easy smile and readiness to engage in friendly conversation.

As we bid farewell to Roderick M. MacKinnon Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, service, and the simple joys of companionship and family. His memory will be cherished, his stories retold. Rod's journey on this earth has ended. May he rest in peace.
