Rodney Burgess Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home on Nov. 15, 2025.
Rodney Lee Burgess, age 60, of The Plains, Ohio passed away in Columbus, Ohio on November 13, 2025. Born August 19, 1965, he was a son of the late David L. and Judy C. (Hoy). Burgess. Rodney grew up in New Straitsville, Ohio and was a 1983 graduate of Miller High School where he competed in basketball, baseball, golf, track, and cross country. He graduated from Rio Grande University in 1987 with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, but his love of sports led him back to working in education and coaching basketball, tennis, and golf at Athens High School. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents David L. and Judy C. (Hoy) Burgess; maternal grandparents Burdette and Marjorie Hoy; paternal grandparents Lawrence and Ethel Burgess; uncle Jerry B. Hoy; and aunt Ruth E. Burgess. He is survived by his brother David (Tammy) Burgess and nephew Kyle Burgess of Lancaster, Ohio; cousins Suzanne (Al) Gay of Aiken, South Carolina; J.B. (Rachel) Hoy of Portland, Oregon; and Jim (Danielle) Hoy of Groveport, Ohio; and their families. Rodney had a talent to talk to other people and had many friendships over the years, including those with whom he graduated from high school and continued to stay in touch with, fellow coaches and all of the many friends he made over the years. His friends helped him through the medical challenges he has faced since 2019. The family is thankful and grateful for the support of his many friends who transported him to medical appointments since 2019 and during his recent medical issues, visited, called, and sent cards and messages- especially Ron Ricketts. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025 at the J.E. HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME, 118 W. Walnut Street, SHAWNEE, OHIO 43782. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025 at the New Straitsville Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Fitch officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local youth sports program, or a charity of one's choice, in Rodney's memory.

Rodney had a very positive impact on so many students at Athens High School including my grandson, Carter. We will miss him and per his request, we will make a donation to the golf team through the Athens High School Athletic Boosters

He was a great man .I have known him since he coached middle school basketball and he put my granddaughter on the bus at West elementary many years ago.I I would see him every day at the High School. I am the day custodian. We have been friends for many years. He used to help change the lock numbers in the summertime with Todd. I will really miss his face and talking to him . One thing about Rodney he never gave up on anything or anybody. I will miss him talking to me in the cafeteria when he was there watching his kids that he took good care of and helped out.REST IN PEACE Rodney. The Bolin Family.
