Rodney Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller & Hill The Funeral Directors - Alexandria on Jan. 9, 2026.
Rodney Lee Smith Sr. was born to Earnest and Martha Smith on July 6, 1969 in Ancon, Panama where they joyfully welcomed their second son. He led a life marked by discipline, guided by the steadfast values instilled by his parents, church community, and service as a soldier in the United States Army. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who loved him.

Rodney decided he wanted to be a positive change and devote his life to service and honor, thus completing his High School Equivalency credential and later enlisting in the United States Army. His strong work ethic, commitment, and perseverance enabled him to achieve the rank of Sergeant First Class and complete multiple tours of duty that include Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He is a decorated war hero, with a career spanning 28 years in the Armed Forces and 24 years in the Louisiana National Guard, both earning him stripes for meritorious service and multiple Medals of Honor.

In 1990, he met Alice Jones, and they were united in marriage in 2001. This union spanned over three decades and was blessed with four children: Rodnesha Sade', Alexandra Janae, Rodney Jr., and Ajah Lynae. Rodney held his role as a father in the highest regard, devoting himself wholeheartedly to ensuring his children were raised in a safe and loving home. In 2021, his youthful spirit was revived with the arrival of his first and only grandchild, Alaia Danielle, whose birth and growth brought him profound joy and fulfillment. Soon thereafter, on September 30, 2022, Rodney was awarded a Certificate of Retirement from the United States Army in recognition of his faithful and honorable service.

On January 7, 2026, Rodney transitioned into eternal rest, surrounded by his beloved life partner and namesake. His life was a testament to the love and joy he shared with all who knew him and to the profound significance of Black fatherhood. His enduring legacy of love and honor will forever live on in the hearts of those who cherish his memory: his parents, Earnest and Martha Smith; his wife, Alice Renee Smith; his children, Rodnesha, Alexandra, Rodney Jr., and Ajah Smith; his granddaughter, Alaia Smith; his brothers, Darryl Smith (Priscilla) and Mark Smith (Tasha); and a of uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws, Veterans, and friends.

Anyone that had the blessing of learning from this man; had the time to sit and talk with him; or had a chance to joke with him, should be truly blessed. Smitty, (That´s what we called him) was a true soldiers soldier. He´s a great man and I´m so happy to have been able to serve with him.

I worked with Rodney for many years at the academy, his professionalism was unmatched. He called it like it was and if he complimented you it was a true statement. Gonna miss you pal.
