Roger ARRE Obituary

August 9, 2025

Spokane - They say grief is love with no place to go.

While Roger lived a full life, there was nothing that brought him more joy and meaning than doting on his wife of 47 years, Bert. He cooked the majority of meals, she sent him on errands and he was at her beck and call to do all of the "man things" she needed. He also was happily by her side for the adventures and activities she planned for them. When Bert lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in January 2025, Roger missed her terribly and soon suffered a fall that he was not able to recover from. He passed away at home from natural causes on August 9, 2025.

Roger was born in Oregon and then lived for a while in Colville before settling for good in Spokane when he was in junior high. During this time, he met many friends, some of which would become like family to him and later to his wife and daughters. He graduated from Central Valley High School in 1975.

Shortly after high school he met Roberta "Bert" Smith and the two quickly married and settled in Otis Orchards, where they would raise their two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica. Roger learned the trade of sheet metal work and was a proud "union man." Even after retirement he enjoyed visiting the union hall for the comradery. He ultimately spent 30 years at Carlson's Sheet Metal before retiring in 2019.

He worked hard to maintain a nice home for his wife and girls, always working in the yard and tending to the garden and doing whatever project Bert came up with. Roger enjoyed fishing and tried to engage his daughters in this pastime. While they humored him, they definitely got more enjoyment out of camping and boating with him. Farragut State Park and Loon Lake were favorites in the summer. His girls fondly remember him carving the perfect marshmallow roasting stick and making Dinty Moore Beef Stew over the campfire while telling them his best scary stories.

When Rog's younger daughter graduated from high school and started attending Gonzaga University, Roger and Bert reinvented themselves as empty nesters. They took up two new hobbies and dove in passionately with both. First they became avid GU basketball fans, always trying to get ahold of tickets for the men's games and becoming season ticket holders to the Lady Zags. He was a dutiful photographer while Bert posed for pictures with the players and they enjoyed an annual trip to the WCC tournament in Vegas.

Their second hobby was the realization of a long term dream to buy property at beloved Loon Lake, where they had already been going for years. They bought a boat and Rog enjoyed pulling his grandkids on the tube, but even better was welcoming three grandsons in quick succession that he could teach to fish. He cared meticulously for the property and took great pride in it, but what he loved most was having any combination of his five grandchildren up to visit.

Rog was always willing to lend a helping hand. He found purpose in giving a ride, fixing something or bringing vegetables from his garden. His green thumb and friendly smile will be missed by his friends and daughters.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Roberta Arre. He is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer (Sam) Schweda and Jessica (Scott) Santos; five grandchildren, Lauren and Olivia Wear, Miles Schweda, and Julian and Harrison Santos. He is also survived by his dear friends of over five decades, Paul Loth and Debbie Novak. No service is currently planned.

If you knew Rodger than you would know how big of a heart he had. Life was always sunny when you were around him. He had a smile that lit up a room but also a smirk that almost made you think he knew something you didn't. His hugs were legendary and genuine. His and Bert's parties were always a blast. Some of you may not know it but Rodger could dance. I am not saying he was always good, but he got out there nevertheless! If he was reading this right now, he would be laughing. I shall miss that smile and that laugh and those hugs. Rest in peace my friend. We shall see you again on the flip side.

I worked withRoger at Carlson. He was always great to work with. I have to say he was so patient with all of the young guys. When I was going through my divorce and had $300 a month to live on, he gave me that little red subaru. What a life saver! What a blessing for my little family. Later I gave it to my son. Much love and prayers to your family.

I was heartbroken to read about Rog and his passing, Im sorry for your loss and pray for your healing. I worked with Rog at least 10 years at Carlson sheet metal, it was like having a father at work he took my side when no one else would and when others said I wouldn't make it in the trade Roger made sure I would. He taught me everything he knew about sheet metal and not mention saving me a couple times when I messed up. My nickname he made up for me was Wood he said its because I was dense in the head, I learned so much from him about being a good worker and husband then a dad when we had my first kid. So many memories I could go on forever with stories. My wife and I will miss him dearly. Good bye Rog be with Bert and be at peace.

Sending condolences to Jennifer and Jessica and family. I am so very sorry for your loss of your wonderful father. And to lose both parents so close together can not be left unsaid.

I have a treasure trove of many fond memories with your dad and mom that I will always cherish; camping trips, a road trip to Seattle to a cat show, summer get togethers, protests at the Courthouse, and fishing with Roger when we were teenagers. They both were always there for me when needed them and I loved them for it.

Roger is now an angel among angels with your mother. Rest in peace to both of them. Until we meet again Roger and Roberta sending you much love and hugs to my dear friends. I am missing you already.

The last picture is of Roger and my mom, Ann, being goofy at a birthday party in 2007. They had a lot of fun when they got together. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Hi Rog, we're sure going to miss you. So sorry that you weren't able to make the trip to Maine with Jenn. I know that it was on your and Roberta's bucket list. I do have a memory of you and I on a trip to Loon Lake. Grandpa needed the fence painted on his property, so you and I went up one morning for the day. I had heard stories of your driving, but hadn't had the privilege of witnessing you in action. HOLY MOLY!!!! I was just hoping that I would arrive in one piece. It was a great day; can't remember if we finished the painting, but truly feared the drive home. The memory of that day has always stuck with me. More recently, we've been talking on the phone and you said that I always made you laugh. You made me laugh, too. Love you and miss you both, Cathy Arre - Sister - in - law
