G. Roger Asplin of Altamont, IL went to be with his savior Jesus Christ on October 3, 2025. He was born in Neillsville, WI on May 29th, 1946, to Hubert Asplin and Vivian (Kinslow) Asplin. He and his 4 brothers grew up in the Moorhead, MN area. Roger attended Moorhead High School for 3 years then finished his senior year at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN in 1964.
He moved to Antioch, CA and worked for Pacific Gas and Electric as a lineman prior to enlisting in the US Army from 1965 to 1968 where he was trained in communications and later served in Vietnam and Panama.
Roger met the love of his life, Rita Ping, while traveling to Altamont, IL on leave in November 1967, with a friend he met in the army. They exchanged letters and were engaged while he was serving in Panama. They were married on November 30th, 1968, shortly after his discharge from the army. After the wedding they lived in California and then Minnesota briefly where their daughter, Renee, was born prior to settling in Altamont in 1970 where Roger worked for the local telephone company. The next year they had a son, Chris. After retirement from the phone company Roger continued doing contract work in communications and later worked at the Effingham Sears store for many years.
Roger was a member of Altamont Christian Church, Effingham American Legion, Effingham VFW and the Professional Santas of Illinois. Roger and Rita dearly enjoyed spreading Christmas cheer to young and old alike over the past 2 decades.
