Roger Allen Baas was born on June 15, 1955, in
Algona, Iowa, the son of Melvin and Rose (Schmidt) Baas. He was raised in Algona alongside his twelve siblings, forming close family bonds that remained important to him throughout his life. Roger graduated from Algona High School in 1975.
Following his graduation, Roger entered the workforce and later established his own lawn care business, a trade he took great pride in. His strong work ethic was evident from an early age, having begun mowing lawns at just twelve years old. Roger would ride his bicycle into town, pulling a homemade trailer his dad helped make, with his lawn mower secured on it.
Roger had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and camping whenever he could. He also looked forward each year to traveling to Camp Okoboji for spring and fall volunteer weekends, where he generously gave his time and talents. He especially cherished time spent watching his son, grandsons, and nephews participate in rodeo events, particularly barrel racing, and took great pride in their accomplishments. Family meant everything to Roger.
He was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona and valued the fellowship found there. Roger also enjoyed friendly competition as a member of a dart club with friends in Sac City. In quieter moments, he found enjoyment in coloring and putting puzzles together. An avid Ford enthusiast, Roger had a lifelong appreciation for Ford vehicles and took pride in being a Ford guy. Roger also had an appreciation for John Deere tractors, he proudly favored the John Deere colors green and yellow.
