Roger "Butch" Leroy Barr, of
Steelville, MO, was born on Saturday, May 18, 1946, in
St. Louis, MO, to Clarence "Jack" Leroy Barr and Vivian Eunice Marie Barr, nee Earney. He passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in
St. Louis, MO, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 12 days.
Roger's life was, fittingly, full of life-marked by sarcasm, quick wit, and a personality that never went unnoticed. From the very beginning, he embraced adventure. As a young boy growing up in California, he even had a brush with Hollywood as an extra in the movie Big Country.
Roger later made his way to
Steelville, MO, where he graduated from Steelville High School with the Class of 1964. Just weeks later, on August 4, 1964, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Sergeant, a source of lifelong pride and respect. After returning home, Roger continued his commitment to service by attending Tarkio College in
St. Louis, MO, where he earned his certification in law enforcement. His career reflected his dedication to protecting and guiding others. Roger served as Chief of Police in
Salem, MO, and later as Chief Juvenile Officer of the 42nd Circuit, roles he carried out with integrity, firmness, and heart.
In later years, Roger worked as a bus driver and security guard at Bird's Nest, helped out at Hutson Funeral Home and worked at the Meramec Music Theater-always staying busy, always staying connected to people.
Roger married Jill Sigler in
Steelville, MO, and from their union came his beloved daughter, Heather. Being a father was one of his proudest roles, a pride that only grew when he became "Opa" to grandchildren.
He had accepted the Lord and was baptized by Pastor Alan Miles at Straightway Baptist Church. He was a member of the Optimist Club in Salem and the Patriot Guard, and he loved the outdoors-especially kayaking and riding motorcycles, which brought him both freedom and joy.
In November of 2013, Roger met the woman who was truly the best fit for him, Dorothy Roland. Together they shared twelve wonderful years, doing everything side by side. They cherished their dog, Bella, and enjoyed many trips to Branson-especially to see his favorite show, Clay Cooper. Time spent with family was always treasured and he enjoyed attending both of their grandchildren's and great grandchildren's activities cheering them on during sporting events.
Roger was famously quick-witted, the undisputed King of Sarcasm, and affectionately dubbed himself "Roger Wonderful." He loved football, loyally cheering for the Oakland Raiders and, more recently, the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a familiar face at the Spare Rib Inn, where he enjoyed socializing with the company of friends.
Most of all, Roger will be remembered as a proud dad, a devoted partner, a loving Opa, loving brother and uncle, a faithful friend, and a man who lived fully and laughed often. His humor, stories, and unmistakable presence will be deeply missed-but fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Vivian Barr; brother, Fred Barr.
Roger is survived by his loving companion Dorothy Roland of
Steelville, MO; children, Heather (husband, Michael) Whitlock of
Salem, MO and Brian Earls of Columbia, MO; sister, Sandy (husband, David) Hatcher of
Steelville, MO; grandchildren, Ashley Bean of Imperial, MO, LTJG Kyle Bean (wife, LTJG Anna) of Naval Base Kitsap, WA, Logan Bean and Paige Bean both of
Steelville, MO; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
