DOTY, Roger L. Beloved husband of Pat Coleman Doty for 58 years, devoted father of Cyndi Dicello, Colleen (Mike) Knecht, and the late Mary Cathryn Doty went to be with the Lord and other family members on December 29, 2023 at 82 years of age. Cherished grandfather of Jordan (Mykala Hayes) Dicello, Brandon Dicello, Kaitlyn (Robby Buffett) Ballachino, Kevin (Sydney Pepper) Ballachino, Madison (Polly West) Knecht, and Sydney (Zach) Pickerell. He is survived by his sister Rosalie Doty, and was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Freda Doty; brothers, Virgil and Bernard Doty; and sisters, Lois McGinnes, Naomi Capan, and Vera Doty. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School, Class of 1959. Due to his lifelong love of all things “aviation” he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he very proudly served our country while stationed at Hickum Air Force Base in Hawaii from 1959-1963.  Roger was a skilled amateur radio operator, communicating with other operators all over the world, initially using Morse code and later doing so through voice contact. He and his wife bred Cavalier King Charles spaniels. They showed their Cavaliers, as well as their Labrador Retrievers, in AKC Conformation for many years. Roger was an active member of the Miami Valley Labrador Retriever Club since 1983, and became an active member of the Queen City Dog Training Club in 1996.  Singing and playing musical instruments were also his passion. He taught himself to play the guitar, as well as the four and five string banjos, and always played by ear. It was not uncommon for neighbors to gather outside the Doty house on summer nights just to listen to him play! Roger was also a very accomplished builder of model airplanes. Many of his airplanes hung for years inside of Johnny’s Toy Store in Greenhills, and at least three were sold to movie makers to be featured in demonstration films. Roger’s dream was to become a pilot, but he was surprised to find out during his Air Force physical that he was colorblind. This made him ineligible to fly planes. Many years later, he discovered flight simulators and became very proficient at “flying“ online. He joined several Flight Simulator groups, comprised of “pilots “ and “air traffic controllers “, and made friends as far away as England and Germany. They would “fly“ together on evenings and weekends. Roger was loved by many and his memory will always live in our hearts. Visitation will take place in Carthage on Monday January 8th at the Hodapp Funeral Home located at 7401 Vine St. from 5pm until 7pm. On Tuesday January 9th there will be a short visitation at 10am at St. Vivian Church located at 7600 Winton Rd., immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Burial with Military Honors will follow Mass at Oak Hill Cemetery at 12:30PM.

Roger’s funeral will be live-streamed. (Eastern Standard Time) .
