Roger Dale Higgins

Roger Dale Higgins, 79, of Bloomington, passed away at IU Bloomington Hospital on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

He was born in Bloomington on January 6, 1947, to Ernest O. and Rosa (Bourke) Higgins. He married the love of his life, Julie Higgins, on May 7, 1978.

Roger worked in the physical plant of the utilities department for Indiana University for thirty years until his retirement. He later became owner of Rainbow Tent Rentals in Bloomington. He remodeled houses, both his own and for his business. He enjoyed taking care of his home, especially if it meant mowing his lawn and driving his tractor, gardening, and helping his wife care for their chickens. He was a member of the Ellettsville Masonic Lodge. Roger loved to help people; he was always a good neighbor. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed fishing at the beach, traveling, going to Florida, and, in his younger years, camping. He was also a talented tinkerer- if there was something he didn't know how to do, he would find out how to do it. Above all else, he loved spending time with his granddaughters; they were his everything.

Roger is survived by his wife, Julie; children, Tammy (Randy) Michael, Tina Porter, and Becky Higgins, all of Bloomington; honorary daughter, Teresa Carson of Bloomington; brother, Ernie (Sharon) Higgins of Bloomington; grandchildren, Shayla (Brian) Ellis, Kendall Porter, Kaylynn Higgins, Calliope Higgins, and Bexley Higgins, all of Bloomington; and several great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Richard Higgins; son in-law, Brad Porter; grandchildren, Brandon Porter and Nikole Higgins; and siblings, Lowell Bourke, Barbara Gross, Gerald Higgins, and Richard Higgins.

In keeping with his and his family's wishes, cremation is planned with a private burial to be held in the spring at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Allen Funeral Home was entrusted to the care of these arrangements.
