Roger Dale Hodnett, 72, passed away at his home in Vardaman on Sunday, August 31, 2025. He was born on December 24, 1952 to Hoskin Hodnett and Ruby Criddle Hodnett.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 2:00 at Southern Funeral Home in Houston with Bro. Johnny Cherry officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 4 from 12:00 until service time at 2:00 at the funeral home.
Roger retired from International Paper in 2016 where he worked for over 40 years. Roger loved deer hunting and listening to the deer dogs run on Magnum Hunting Club land, where he was a long-time member. He was also a member of the Vardaman Masonic Lodge for many years. He served as a volunteer firefighter in Vardaman for several years until he retired due to health problems.
Roger and his friend, Wayne Fugett, went on many fishing trips to Grenada Lake. After Wayne died, Roger would go to the old Hwy 8 backwaters on Saturday just to watch people fishing. On Sunday he would go to the Graysport Crossing and the Gums Crossing bridges and boat landings He put his fishing reels up after Wayne died.
Roger always wanted to own a tractor like all the farmers around Vardaman. He finally was able to buy a John Deer tractor after retiring. He used it to repair people's driveways in Vardaman. He would haul dirt and rocks all over town fixing driveways. He never would take any money for his work. Roger will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Roger is survived by his sisters, Shirley Ann Davis of Houston and Ruby Nell Morton Hendrick of Mayhew; his brother-in-law, Steve Pettit of Houston; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoskin and Ruby Hodnett; his brothers, Thomas Hodnett and Lester Hodnett; and his sister Brenda Darlene Pettit.
Southern Funeral Home is honored to serve Roger's family during this difficult time.
