Roger Douglas Howerton

Roger Douglas Howerton, 93, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior while at his home in Oak Ridge, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. He was born April 03, 1932, in Guilford County, N.C., to the late Luther Douglas and Vera Meadows Howerton. He was a graduate of Summerfield High School and Oak Ridge Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After 32 years of service, he retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company. Roger was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge and served the Lord through his service and dedication to Central until his death. He began his service to the Oak Ridge community as a member of the Oak Ridge Fire Department. His lifelong dedication to the fire department spanned 53 years and included serving on the Board of Directors after his retirement from active fire duty. Roger was instrumental in the incorporation of the Town of Oak Ridge, as well as serving as the Mayor Pro-Tem during his time serving on the Town Council of Oak Ridge. Roger's dedication to the Oak Ridge community goes far beyond what can be listed here, and because of this, he was presented with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice "Tootsie" Atkins and Alice Faye Howerton.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Donree Redmon Howerton; daughter, Annette Marshall (Barry); son, Anthony Howerton (Lea Ann); four grandchildren, Heather Carroll (Michael), Brooke Haney (Weston), Bruce Bridges (Renee), Amber Stephenson (Sam); ten great-grandchildren, Alex Howerton, Dakota Carroll, Dake, Lute, Piper, and Harper Haney, Christopher Crews, Riley Smith, Gavin Bridges, and Ryleigh Stephenson.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Central Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, N.C., with Pastor Roy Carter and Pastor David Miller officiating. Interment will follow at First Batist Church Cemetery, Walnut Cove, N.C. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 22nd, at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, Stokesdale Chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church.
