Roger William Johnson 11/23/31 - 8/13/25 Wenatchee, Washington Roger William Johnson - husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, electrical engineer, outdoorsman, and excellent card player- passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, August 13th in his home in
East Wenatchee, Washington. He was 93 years young. Roger was born in Chelan, WA on November 23rd, 1931, to Andrew and Hattie Johnson, the second of three boys. The family eventually moved to the Wenatchee area where he attended school and developed an interest in hiking, fishing, and hunting. He also joined the Sea Scouts which led to a short stint in the Navy where he learned how to maintain the electrical systems on his ship. When he returned to civilian life he became an electrician at the Alcoa plant, south of Wenatchee. He eventually met the love of his life, Rose Mellor, a Scottish lass who was working as a nanny for the Dick Odabashian family in Cashmere. They married in 1954 and began building a legacy of sacrificial love and hard work together with their three children, Ken, Nancy, and Sandra. Roger eventually hired on at Bonneville Power as a Meter and Relay technician while moving his young family to Ephrata, WA in 1958. In 1964, Roger drove his young family cross-country in 3 days to New York City, where they boarded a BOAC Boeing 707 jet to Rose's homeland in Edinburgh, Scotland. This 10-week trip was life-changing, especially for the Johnson kids, who still have lasting relationships with the Scottish relatives and an ongoing desire to explore the world. Roger worked hard at his job, eventually earning an Electrical Engineering Degree in his spare time, even while providing so much for his young family. His work as an Electrical Engineer allowed him to move up to a supervisor's role at BPA and He took successive Jobs in Ferndale, Wenatchee, Vancouver, Gig Harbor, and retired in Spokane at the age of 55 and then moved back to the Wenatchee area, where he and Rose enjoyed their retirement years as much-loved grandparents. After Rose passed away in 2007, Roger spent many years as a snowbird in Yuma, AZ, where he enjoyed meeting new friends, birding, hiking, horseshoes, shooting pool, golfing, and playing cards. While he tended to shun large crowds, he was an excellent conversationalist and loved to visit with people one on one. Roger was also a competitive pinochle and bid euchre player and he loved to win! Roger had a competitive spirit, but he always played by the rules and was also very generous in so many ways! He is survived by his children: Ken (Annette) Johnson, Nancy (Mike) Johnson, Sandy (Nelson) Melo; 6 granddaughters: Kim (Tom) Heneghan, Brittany (Jon) Berthelotte, Michelle (JR) Noble, Kendra (Eugene) Ngai, Kayli (Kellan) Sells, Morgan (Chris) Barrett; and 10 great grandkids who affectionately knew him as just "Great"! He was preceded in death by his two brothers: Clayton and Ron Johnson of Wenatchee: and an infant daughter, Noreen. At Roger's request, there will be no funeral service, but you are invited to view his website at www.HeritageMemorialChapel.com to leave a memory or condolence.
