Dr. Roger Jacob McMurray, 45, of Greenville, died as the result of a tragic traffic accident on Sunday, December 17, 2023. He witnessed a wreck and was assisting that victim when he was struck and killed by another vehicle. He was born on July 23, 1978 in Hendersonville, NC to Kirk and Linda McMurray. He graduated from North Henderson High School in 1996 where he excelled in football and was a black belt in karate. He went on to graduate from East Carolina University and Brody School of Medicine. He served 4 years in the U. S. Air Force before returning to Greenville in 2014 to practice medicine at Physicians East.
Roger was a man of integrity in all areas of his life. He died a hero, assisting his fellow man, but he also lived as a hero in his daily life. He was first and foremost a loving Christian husband and father who dedicated his life to his family's happiness and well-being. His priority was to lead his family in their love for the Lord. He was the best daddy who was always ready to play, teach, and encourage. He was the son that spoke with his parents every day, the big brother that was always involved, and the doctor that truly cared about every patient and was dedicated to their care. Roger served in his church on the children's hall and as a deacon; he served his country as a major in the Air Force. He was an ECU graduate and an enthusiastic Pirate. He was greatly loved by an array of friends from his many walks in life.
He is survived by his wife, Renn Baker McMurray, son, Baker McMurray, daughter, Elliott McMurray, all of the home; parents, Kirk and Linda McMurray; brother, Matthew McMurray, sister-in-law, Holly, and nephew, Carson; uncle, David McMurray and cousins, David, John and Jake, all of Hendersonville, NC; parents-In-law, Marshall and Robin Baker of Knightdale, NC; brother-in-law, Matt Baker and wife, Julie, and their children, Nash and Hattie of Raleigh, NC.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, December 22, 2023, at Unity Church, 4301 Charles Blvd, Greenville, NC. It will be livestreamed at the following links:

I'll never forget Roger and the void will never be filled. But my sorrow and sense of loss can't compare to those of Roger's family. I pray that his wife and kids find a way to accept that God's plan for him now.

I've never had a doctor that I trusted, respected and was more comfortable visiting with than Roger. He was "Roger" to me and as much my friend as my doctor. We talked often about his family trips to the mountains and how much fun they had. I cannot imagine the pain his family and close associates will endure from his loss. He will be sorely missed by me and all whose lives he touched.

First thing I think? What a witness for Christ! Dr. McMurray reflected Christ´s love in his work as a genuinely caring physician .. we often would take time during visits to talk about our Savior. I was always a bit amazed when I might call in to speak to a nurse to get a call back with Dr. McMurray actually on the phone... he was genuinely engaged with his patients.. he was the "hands and feet of Christ" in his work.. his life will continue to be a lasting witness and influence the lives of the people who were blessed to know him.

Dr McMurray was my physician. He always smiled and usually said 'not you again'? And then he would laugh. Was always concerned and took great care of his patients. He will be missed.

I remember Roger´s warm smile and calming demeanor when I was a lowly intern and terrified of the inpatient service. He was always willing of answer my silly questions in a kind way and helped me become both a more confident resident and teacher. I am so incredibly sad that he is fine but know his memory and legacy will continue to light the way for all those he impacted just like me. Sending all my love to his family.
