Roger Allen Nickerson, of Harborcreek, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the age of 95. He was born in Erie on August 15, 1930, son of the late Allen W. and Alice V. Magee Nickerson.
Roger spent his early years in Massachusetts with his family and then, upon their return to Erie, he attended school there and graduated with honors from Strong Vincent High School in June of 1948. Roger then enlisted with the Navy in 1949, serving in Korean War and was honorably discharged in September of 1949. He attended the General Electric Machinist Apprenticeship Program in 1954, then transferred to the Draftsman-Designer Apprentice Program, completing it with honors. He worked calculus problems as a hobby. Roger worked for GE for 30 years, retiring in 1983.
Roger married Marcella J. Steffy on January 25, 1953 and were married for 67 years. They were avid readers and enjoyed traveling, visiting relatives and going to wineries on their travels. He was an avid runner and entered many 10K races with the Erie Runners Club. Roger volunteered at Brevillier Village and the Public Library. He belonged to bridge clubs and loved playing all types of cards. Among many other interests, Roger loved being in the outdoors.
Our parents were wonderful parents and ahead of their time. They were well liked by so many people.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella J. Steffy Nickerson; a sister, Pauline Nelson; a brother, Gary Nickerson; and a niece, Dahle Brown. He is survived by his children, Cynthia A. and Steven R. Nickerson; niece, Linda Nelson Andrus; two nephews, Brian Nelson (Gail) and Jeffery Ellis; and other family members in the South.
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Thursday, November 13th, from 11 am until the time of the Funeral Service there at 1:30 pm, conducted by Rev. Jean Kuebler. Roger will be laid to rest with his wife, Marcella, at Laurel Hill Cemetery following the service. Condolences may be sent to www.dusckasfuneralhomes.com.
