Roger William Sterler passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Sanford Sheldon Care Center at the age of 96 years, 1 month, and 21 days. Born on August 16, 1929, in Ashton, Iowa to John and Frances (DeGroot) Sterler, Roger’s early education took place at the local country school until the 8th grade, after which he dedicated himself to helping his father with milking and later working on his uncle Clarence’s farm.

Roger dedicated himself to serving his country as a staff sergeant in the Army during the challenging years of the Korean War, from 1951 to 1953. His commitment and bravery were recognized with various honors, including the National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Korean Service Medal. He also received the US Korean Service Medal, adorned with two Battle Stars, which speaks to the intensity of his experiences. Notably, Roger fought valiantly in The Battle of Old Baldy, where his courage shone through. For his acts of heroism while facing hostile forces, he was awarded the Army Accommodation Medal and honored on the Military Roll of Honor. His sacrifices during those tumultuous times remind us of the immense bravery and dedication that our service members and women exhibit in the line of duty.

In 1953, Roger married Dena Josephine Haken. He continued to work on his uncle Thomas’ farm until 1957, when they moved to Tyler, Minnesota, renting a farm from Dena’s uncle. During their time in Tyler, Roger cherished the opportunity to preach at the Tyler Christian Reformed Church, where he also served as a deacon and elder.

In 1969, Roger and Dena purchased a farm in Ashton, where he not only farmed but also raised purebred hogs. Roger took great pride in showing hogs at various state fairs, including those in Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska, along with the Spencer Fair.

Dena’s passing 1977 after a courageous battle with cancer was a heart-wrenching loss for Roger and their family.

In 1981, he found love again and married Joanne Nieuwendorp Damstra. Together, they owned and operated R&J’s New and Used Furniture in Sheldon, where Roger also explored his interest in auctioneering. Their partnership continued until Joanne’s passing in 2019, and Roger maintained the business until his early retirement in 2021 at the age of 91.

Roger had a deep passion for NASCAR races and baseball, but his greatest joy came from attending events where his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated. He treasured family gatherings and loved taking part in Ashton Days and various parades.

Roger leaves behind a loving family, including his children, Kerwin and Kathy Sterler of Sheldon, Iowa; Valoria and Kim Verrips of Okoboji, Iowa; Denise and Lance Beimers of Hospers, Iowa; Cynthia and Tim Herman of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Rogerica and James McDonald of Sheldon; Wayne Sterler of Wellington, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Kris Sterler of Harlan, Iowa; and Jervis Sterler of Hull, Iowa; along with 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald Sterler of Lake Park, Iowa, and two sisters, Madonna Feyerabend of Hartley, Iowa, and Marilyn Rees of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Roger was preceded in death by both of his wives, Dena and Joanne, daughter-in-law, Donna Sterler, and his brother Robert.

Roger will always be remembered for his unwavering dedication to the Lord and his beloved family. His devotion has left a profound impact on all who knew him, serving as a comforting reminder of the love and commitment he embodied throughout his life. May his memory be eternally blessed and cherished.
