Roger Herbert Voorhis, 76, of Newkirk, OK, passed away peacefully at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center with his loving wife by his side on Saturday, April 26, 2025. After a courageous battle with cancer lasting over a year, Roger was called to be with our Lord and Savior.
Born on March 15, 1949, in Arkansas City, KS, Roger was the son of Herbert and Joyce (Martin) Voorhis. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1967, then enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 with the 101st Airborne Division.
Upon completing his military service, Roger met Janie Potterton, the love of his life. They married on June 23, 1972, and together built a home filled with love, laughter, and dedication. Roger worked at Cessna in Wichita, KS, before accepting a role as a draftsman for the City of Arkansas City, KS. During this time, he and Janie built their home together-a place where they raised their family and continued to reside.
Roger was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, cherishing time with his loved ones. He and Janie were blessed with two children, Derek and Jana. Later in his career, he worked for Consumer Products, retiring in 2011.
Known for his quiet-natured spirit, Roger had a gift for making others smile. He deeply loved his family, was an avid reader, had a passion for learning, and was an incredible artist. Above all, Roger was a God-fearing man who cherished his faith, knew his scriptures, and walked closely with his Heavenly Father. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife Janie, son Derek Voorhis and wife Deidre of Udall, KS, daughter Jana Hayes and husband Todd of Ponca City, OK, brothers Steve Voorhis and wife Rita of Burrton, KS, and Tom Voorhis and Sharon of Arkansas City, KS. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Landon Blakey, Logan Blakey, Josie Blakey, and Erik Hayes of Ponca City, OK; Garrett, Aedric, and William Voorhis of Udall, KS, and his nephews, Shane and Shaun Voorhis of Burton, KS.
He was preceded in death by his brother Dennis Voorhis, parents Herbert and Joyce Voorhis, and grandson Logan Blakey.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 5, 2025 at Riverview Cemetery. There is no visitation scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to Josh or Alexis Smith for the Elise Smith Family Fund, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Janie and all of your family. I just saw that Roger is now with the Lord. Praying for peace and comfort for all of you. Roger was a great man. Great cousin and friend. Great husband and dad and grandfather. We had a good time when we were kids at Grandma Cathern and Grandpa Harry Martins farm and houses. Hold onto all your precious memories and know he is at rest and with the Lord. Love you
