Rogerio (Rocky) Garza's journey began when he was born on August 3, 1934, to Vidal and Barbarita Garza in Rosita, Texas. He became the oldest brother to Mario, Bernardo, Manuel, Elias, and Crisanto Garza. He worked hard in school and was a star athlete, playing basketball and baseball.
After high school, Rogerio decided to serve his country. Rogerio enlisted in the United States Army. He trained to become a medic and provided medical care to his fellow soldiers during the Korean War.
Following his service, Rogerio chose to build his life in Corpus Christi. One serendipitous night, Rogerio's brother, Mario, invited him to go dancing at the Galvan Ballroom. There, Rogerio met Alice McCabe, and he knew instantly that she would be the love of his life. Rogerio courted Alice and asked her to marry him. They went on to have three children: Rene, Rolando, and Leticia.
Rogerio loved Corpus Christi and invested deeply in the community. First, he trained to be a welder at Del Mar College. Later on, to support his family, he went into the grocery business. After working as a produce supervisor and then a meat market supervisor, Rogerio built on his experience and opened his own grocery store called Super Mex #2. He was an active member of the Grocery Association. He also gave back to the community by employing customers' children and by providing credit accounts so that customers could feed their families during times of struggle. Rocky always had a big smile and only had positive things to say about life and people. But it was his family that truly defined his life. To his children and grandchildren, he was a man who spoke volumes without words-his facial expressions conveying love, wisdom, humor, and understanding in ways that transcended language. Those who knew him best learned to read the stories written in his eyes and the subtle shifts of his smile.
Rogerio's journey was very much influenced by his faith. He was a man of GOD. He knew the importance of being humble and serving others. He continued to serve the church and the community by being active in the Knights of Columbus.
Rogerio was also involved in the community by staying physically active. He played softball for many years in a local league until an injury forced him to switch to golf. He enjoyed golf so much that he was part of the Pan American Golf Association, and he played until he was well into his 80s.
Rogerio lived a long life and one for which anyone would be proud. He was most pleased with the family he and Alice built, including his three children, his grandchildren Brenda, Christopher, and Stephen, and his great-grandchildren Caitlin, Jacob, and Maddy. Rogerio's family will continue to tell his story to future generations.
Rogerio's family wishes to thank Lorena, Sylvia, Aris, Maggie, DaVita Dialysis, Outreach, and Tribute Hospice for their assistance as Rogerio lived out the last chapter of his earthly life.
