Legendary Home Improvement Expert, Ron Hazelton, Passes Away
Ron Hazelton, a leading authority and pioneer in the do-it-yourself home improvement field, died peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2023, with his family at his side. He was 81.
On the road, in the television studio or in his workshop, Ron's enjoyed providing people the advice and motivation they needed to improve their homes. Ron was well-known for his trademark blue denim work-shirts, his friendly, easygoing manner and his encouraging 'you-can-do-it' style. His syndicated television show,, is now in its 24th season. As the former Home Improvement Editor for, he reported on a variety of topics related to home improvement, design, repair, health and safety. He hosted the History Channel series,, and other History Channel programs, including and. Ron also offered his home improvement expertise on and.
He first began sharing his expertise in 1989 with his own weekend home improvement show,, pioneering the concept of reality-based, on-location home improvement television. The show ran for over six years in the San Francisco Bay Area on ABC's KGO-TV and also aired on the Home and Garden Television Network (HGTV).
Ron was born March 29, 1942 in Binghamton, New York, to Earl and Wanda Hazelton. He graduated from Florida State University with a degree in business and marketing in 1965. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy for four years and served on the USS Hull during the Vietnam War.
After the Navy, a successful career in marketing and advertising followed. In his late 30's he underwent a self-described midlife crisis, quit his job as vice president of a Boston ad agency, and hopped on a motorcycle for a cross-country adventure that led him to San Francisco. As the son of a building contractor and avid do-it-yourselfer, Ron discovered he had a similar passion to his father. In 1978, he founded Cow Hollow Woodworks, a storefront restoration workshop where he built and restored custom and antique furniture. On the advice of his dentist, who was one of his clients, Ron broke into television with his show, on ABC's KGO-TV. As a master craftsman, he was able to share with others the satisfaction he had working with his hands on home improvement projects and enhancing the beauty and comfort of a home.
His talents were recognized by executives at ABC's (GMA) and he was hired as the show's home improvement editor where he was assigned to producer Lynn Drasin. In addition to becoming a production team, they became life partners, marrying in 1997 at New York City's Plaza Hotel. Together, from 1994 to 2003, they produced a wide range of stories for GMA that focused on home safety, building projects, new products and more, becoming a household name across the country.
Ron's wanderlust found new opportunity when he pioneered the concept of a traveling home improvement show that featured, "real homes, real projects, real problems, and real people." The show,, featured Ron traveling across the country in a sleek motorhome with a fully equipped state-of-the-art mobile workshop in tow, visiting homeowners who needed a helping hand on home improvement projects. The show offered tips and guidance for the do-it-yourselfer. Ron prided himself on being a teacher and loved to give people the confidence that they could work with tools on home and garden projects. His warmth and ability to connect with people was at the heart of his show.
As Ron and Lynn grew their family, they moved from New York City and settled in Fairfield, Connecticut, where the show is headquartered and continues to be produced.
Ron believed his greatest accomplishments were his children, daughter Danielle and son Max. Having children later in life brought Ron more joy than he could have imagined. He loved creating a wonderful home for his own family and sharing his love of learning with his children.
He was a man of great integrity, intelligence, humor and patience and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
Ron is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lynn Drasin, and children Danielle and Max Hazelton. He leaves his brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Cheri Hazelton, nephews Michael and Eric, niece Karly Hazelton, and sister Jan Hazelton. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Marlene Drasin.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Yale New Haven Health Bridgeport Hospital for their great care of Ron.
A memorial service will be held on June 4, 2023, at 11:00am at the Abraham L. Green & Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, CT.

Ron was such a good guy, he once posted a ladder tutorial on Youtube, I got stuck on the roof but it still helped me to get on the roof.

I am a fan of House Calls and have recorded it for years. Upon watching the new host I got curious about Ron and found he passed. As a life long woodworker and engineer, I can say Ron gave great advice and knew what he was talking about. I am glad I can still see him be reminded of good technique. May God bless you all as you face the days ahead. Please know others feel your loss and celebrate his life.

Just this morning I was thinking about home improvement projects and Ron Hazelton came to mind. When I researched his name I was saddened to find that he had passed. But, my fondest memory is that when my wife and I purchased our first home Ron was a part of my weekly routine to gather ideas and suggestions to apply to our home. I watched him and his show faithfully. He gave me the confidence to take on projects that some would not. He was a Great inspiration to me and that is something I will never forget. Thank you Ron, may you rest in peace. James Curley

I just discovered the changes to House Calls, and the story of Ron's passing. I enjoyed Ron's manner and explanations of so many household tasks and improvements. It was great to see him help homeowners with things that were serious issues, or just annoyances!
Many times I would tell my husband, who had missed a show, that he had to view a segment where Ron did some job for which we could use help.
Our sympathy to Lynn, Max and Danielle. May they have sweet memories and peace of heart and mind. We will miss Ron's voice and kind manner.

Here we are in June of 2024,and I just saw his obituary on the internet. I was watching one of his many programs,Hands on history, when I decided to see what he's been doing ,and began to search the internet.
I am devastated to hear of his passing! His mild manner and his ability to connect with his audience, made it such a pleasure to watch his shows!
We need to see more people if his caliber on these tv shows, in this day of hate and rage, that seems to permeate our world and in our media. God Bless you, Ron!
Thank you for making a better in the world!

I would like to start by say that I am so sorry to be sending you this very late condolence regarding Ron's passing. I haven't been keeping with all of his projects and travels that he had been on. All the creative home improvement ideas that I had seen in the past are a testament to his talents and Ron's home improvements. I enjoyed watching how patient he was with individual home
owners who have never touched a woodworking tool. I am honored to have been able to experience the videos he as created. I hope that they will be available for viewers to see and learn from them in the future. To Ron's family, thank you Ron for all the great home improvement ideas you shared over the years.

Dear Hazelton family. I just learned of Rons' passing yesterday. About 16 years ago I reached out to Ron to see if he would have any interest in something I invented as a woodworking tool. Ron did show an interest which caused me to meet him at his home in Fairfield Ct. where we filmed an episode which would later be broadcast on live television. In meeting Ron, I could tell that he was a very kind and sincere person. As time went on, Ron sold some of my handmade tools in his online store. Ron later taught me how to sell my tools on Amazon. Ron brought much enthusiasm into our lives here in Thompson, Ct. I have thought of him often since meeting him. I keep a very special photograph of he and I in my workshop. Ron will be missed by very many people including myself. Best wishes always, Kevin Elie.

Many years ago I first became aware of Ron's show and began watching it consistently.
I learned a lot from watching Ron show us how to make repairs and create things that came to be very helpful.
Though after moving from one state to another in 2008 the local stations there didn't carry the show.
But now that I live back in upstate NY I once again found the show and I was off to refreshing what I learned years ago and even some new ones.

My heart is heavy after finding out that Mr. Hazleton passed away earlier in 2023.
May he rest in peace and I am sure God is allowing him to continue his craft even if Heaven is perfect, Ron I am sure can find a thing or two in which to improve on.

Ron Hazleton you will be sorely missed sir.
Sincerely, Joseph Jerminario.
