This is Marcia Schunk Smith. I went to high school with Ronnie and he was a very sweet kid. At our 10 year high school reunion, in 1976, Judy Groome and I and my boyfriend at the time, now my husband, sat at a table with Ronnie. When Judy and I went off to visit with classmates, my boyfriend David sat with Ronnie and he told him a lot about his life. Here´s what David remembers...
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ronnie Hipple at the 1976 Woodruff high school reunion. I was taken to the reunion by Judy "Killer" Groome and my future wife, Marcia Schunk. Ronnie and I were sitting at the same table while Judy and Marcia danced with former boyfriend or hoped to have been boyfriends. Ronnie told me he was the accountant for the Peoria Hilton formally the Pere Marquette...
I believe he started there as a Bellman, and after serving in the US Air Force, he returned to become an accountant. Ronnie had great stories about meeting Dick Nixon and Ronald Reagan at the hotel during the presidential campaigns. He lamented the condition the Reagan group left the rooms - messy and full of whiskey bottles. He said the Nixon rooms were neat but heavy with the smell of cigarettes. Ronnie really liked the Air Force. He flew as crew on C 130´s and C141´s
He said most flights were just boring, transport flights, but the most exciting trip was transporting elephants from Vietnam.
Ronnie was really taken by Dungeons & Dragons. He told me all about the game and strategy. He was an experienced player and a dungeon master. Ronnie played in many tournaments and attended all the conventions. He was also an accomplished chess player and was torn between the time to spend on the two games
I found him to be a really nice guy

I'm so sorry to hear of Ron's passing. I work at St. Francis Woods and have known him for several years. He was a very nice man and he will be missed by many. So glad he got to take that flight last year. I know he had been waiting for a very long time.

I attended Woodruff High School with Ron and remember him as being kind and friendly. He was also a serious student. Please be assured of my prayers as you mourn his loss
