Graveside service for Ronald Lee Mapes will be 10:00 a.m., July 28, 2025 at Alva Municipal Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Alva with Reverend Taylor Anderson, officiating. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 pm on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at Marshall Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. Ronald Lee Mapes, son of the late Chester Dean and Rhoda May (Essex) Mapes, was born August 29, 1942, at Farry, Oklahoma, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, July 23, 2025, in Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 82 years, 10 months, and 24 days. Ron grew up on the family farm at Farry, alongside two brothers and four sisters. He attended Farry schools for most of his education, transferring to Freedom High School his senior year, where he graduated in 1960. He was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Peggy Lou, on December 30, 1961, at his in-laws' house at Cora. Their family grew with the blessings of two sons: Jeffrey Lee, born in 1962, and Todd Lee, born in 1967. Ron's first job following high school was at Ron's DX, which would later become Garnett's of Alva. Following, he went on to deliver bread for Golden Crust before continuing to deliver for Wonder Bread for a career spanning thirty-two years. In 2006, Ron and Peggy moved back to Cora to enjoy the beautiful country life and farming. Ron enjoyed raising his own cow-calf herd, farming, and harvesting wheat. Ron and Peggy enjoyed mornings and evenings sitting on the front porch looking out over their farmland. He loved quail hunting and fishing in his spare time. Ron was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Ron cherished time spent with his family and rarely missed a sporting event or livestock show when it came to supporting his sons and granddaughters. Besides his parents, Chester and Rhoda, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Keeton, Roberta Story, and Peggy Jean Hysinger; his brother, Richard Mapes; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Case and Twyla Mapes; and three brothers-in-law, Ellie Welch, Wayne Keeton, and Bob Case, as well as an infant child. Ron is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Alva; his son, Jeff Mapes, and wife, Michelle, of Alva; his son, Todd Mapes, and wife, Kim, of Arkansas; his brother, Robert Mapes, of Colorado; his sister, Rose Welch, of Wichita; four grandchildren, Courtney Acker, and husband, Ryan, of Tulsa; Cathy King, and husband, JP, of Edmond; Audrey Mapes, of Arkansas; and Breanna Mapes, and fiancé, Adam, of Wichita; brother-in-law, Johnny Barnes; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to First United Methodist Church of Alva or Alva Goldbug Foundation.
