It is with great sadness that we share the news of Ronald Matney, age 66, proud native of Slate Creek, born and raised in the coal fields of Buchanan County Virginia sadly left our world, with his wife Teresa by his side, on July 24, 2024 at his home in Abingdon, Virginia also surrounded by his family.

Ron loved the mountains and sharing time with family and friends in the outdoors; whether just a hike, horseback riding, hunting for ginseng, turkey or deer the mountains held a special place in his heart. Though Ron was a handsome hardworking man, he was also a stubborn ole sole that dreamed big and loved with all his heart. His skills of working with wood and leather will be cherished by his family and friends always.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents Perry and Maggie Matney and his beloved brother Ted Matney. His loving spirit will always remain with his loving wife Teresa Lester Matney, his beautiful daughter Misty Echols and her husband Matt, his son Jason Matney and his three Grandchildren Elizabeth Echols Foote, Scout Echols and Ryker Matney and Great Grandson Joel Matthew Foote, his loving/best friend brother Donald Matney and his wife Rita, his sister Linda Smith and her husband Randall, his sis Tricia Matney as well as several special nephews and nieces, who will continue to honor his memory by living their lives to the fullest.

Though his time was brief, the depth of love and happiness he shared will forever remain. He left a mark on the hearts of all those who were fortunate to know him. As Ron would say “Going to the Mountains is going home”.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made directly to the family.
