Ronald J. Mullins, age 80, widower of Artie Mullins passed away Sunday, June 29th, 2025, at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington, KY. He was born in 1944 to the late Matthew and Myrtle Mays Mullins in Irvine, KY. Ronald was an overcomer. He grew up in a home without indoor plumbing or heat. He recalled having to gather firewood and coal every morning for his mother. He left school in the 8th grade. He later joined the Army and served in Vietnam. Primarily assigned to provide ship-to-shore transport, he also assisted in transporting and retrieving US and Vietnamese special forces where he manned a.50 caliber machine gun during the missions. Like many veterans those experiences stayed with him for the rest of his life.
After his discharge he earned his GED and went on to graduate from Eastern Kentucky University. He later had a long career with the Army Corps of Engineers as an electrician at hydroelectric powerplants in Western Kentucky and Alabama. He was an avid UK basketball and football fan. He grew up listening to the exploits of Cliff Hagen, Dan Issel and the "Fiddlin' Five" and he passed down his love of UK to his sons. He also enjoyed fishing and had a deep sense of humor with a wonderful laugh.
Other than his parents and wife he was preceded by one brother Troy Mullins, and two sisters, Nancy Mullins, and Shirley Bozo
.
Ronald is survived by two sons, David J. Mullins of Berea, KY, and Kelly W. (Kirsten) Mullins of Seattle, WA., one sister Gail Mullins of Lexington, KY and three grandchildren, Madeleine, Bronwyn, and Katherine Mullins all of Seattle, WA.
Services will be scheduled at a later date with Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
