Ronald E. Palmer, 84, of Glastonbury, beloved husband of 61 years to the late Mary (Turner) Palmer, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2024 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Waltham, MA, he was the son of Russell and Isabelle (Imoff) Palmer, then residing in Glastonbury for over 50 years.
Ronald's unwavering dedication to his country was exemplified through his distinguished service in the United States Air Force. Enlisting in 1957, he embarked on a remarkable journey spanning across Korea, Japan, and various Air Force bases in the United States, where his role as an Air Operations Specialist was marked by excellence. Throughout his service, Ronald garnered many accolades, including the Air Force and Army Commendation and Good Conduct Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal adorned with three Bronze Stars, among others. In 1976, Ronald continued his service in the Connecticut Air National Guard, contributing significantly as a member of the 103rd Fighter Group at Bradley Air National Guard Base in East Granby. He assumed essential roles, including Air Operations Supervisor, Intelligence Supervisor, and Senior Enlisted Advisor showcasing his versatility and leadership skills. Ronald's distinguished career was highlighted by numerous achievements, including his selection as the 1982 Airman of the Year by the 103rd Fighter Group. He was also the president of the Flying Yankee Chapter of the Air Force Association. With his retirement as Chief Master Sergeant from the Connecticut Air National Guard in 1999, Ron's legacy of service and commitment to duty will forever be remembered and appreciated.
Ronald was the founding owner of Palmer and Associates Insurance Agency of Glastonbury, where he worked beside his children Joseph and Elizabeth before retiring in 2014. He was the president of the Glastonbury, East Hartford, South Windsor Insurance Agents Association where his contributing insights benefited the greater insurance industry. In addition, he served on the President's Advisory Council of the Professional Insurance Agents Association.
His dedication to service extended far beyond his military career, shining brightly in his civilian life. Ron's commitment to the community was profound, as evidenced by his leadership roles in various organizations. As President of the Service Club of Glastonbury, he led initiatives to assist those in need. Ron was also drawn to the Special Olympics, where his coaching led to meaningful connections with the athletes he mentored.
At East Catholic High School, Ron's impact was profound and multifaceted. His tenure as Chairman of the ECHS Board of Education underscored his passion for education and his desire to ensure a bright future for graduates. In helping to establish the Booster Club and the girls' soccer program, Ron's vision and tireless efforts left an indelible mark on East Catholic. From 1980 to 1992, his stewardship as the girls' soccer coach not only led to victories on the field but also instilled invaluable life lessons in his players. Ron's many contributions led to his induction into the East Catholic Hall of Fame in 1998.
Ron's influence reached beyond ECHS, resonating statewide through his pivotal role as a Charter Member of the Connecticut Girls Soccer Coaches Association in 1989. His ascent to the presidency and subsequent tenure as Executive Director of the CGSCA from 1992 to 2005 underscored his commitment to advancing the sport he loved. For his unwavering dedication to girls' soccer, Ron was honored with the Appreciation Award, a testament to the statewide impact he had on the sport.
Ron was also an avid fisherman, taking many annual trips to Maine with family and friends, which created cherished memories and a legacy of camaraderie. His love of fishing led to the purchase of a lake house in Canada, where he enjoyed many summers on the water with family and friends. Together with Mary, he made wonderful friends in Canada that they considered part of their extended family.
The family would like to extend their most sincere appreciation to Ron's friend and caregiver Dil, along with Vitas Hospice, especially nurse Rachel and aide Lovelace. Ron received exceptional care from the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center through Dr. Olugbile, Dr. Rutter and their compassionate staff.
Ronald is survived by his son Joseph R. Palmer and his wife Judith of Winsted, his four daughters: Stephanie Evans and her husband Andrew of Glastonbury, Renee Lemay and her husband Leon of Glastonbury, Elizabeth Palmer and her wife Linda Skowronek of Portland, Andrea O'Connell and her husband Clifford of Durham, six grandchildren; Amanda Carabase (Duke), Allison Evans, John Palmer (Nicole), Matthew Palmer, Katherine Lemay and Erin O'Connell and nine great grandchildren who were the joy of his life. Ronald is also survived by his brother Paul Palmer. Besides his wife of 61 years, Ronald was predeceased by his brothers Calvin and Buddy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 14 at 10:00 at SS Isidore and Marie Parish at St. Augustine Church, 55 Hopewell Rd., South Glastonbury. A burial with military honors will follow immediately at Neipsic Cemetery, Glastonbury. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 13 from 4pm to 7pm at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury.
