Ronald Patten Obituary

Ronald Sheridan Patten
05/24/1932 - 09/12/2025
Ronald Patten, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully by his wife's side in San Mateo, California. He was 93 years old.
A fourth-generation Californian, Ron was raised in Pasadena, California, with his parents, George Downing Patten and Ruth Pageler Patten, along with his brother, Richard (deceased), and sister, Virginia (Kantor).
Ron attended Alhambra High School, where he met his future wife, Sally (Cooper) Patten, with whom he has shared 73 years of marriage.
He went on to earn his B.A. from Occidental College, where he also competed on the swim team and was a member of the ATO Fraternity. After college, Ron was expected to take over the family business, Patten and Blinn Lumber Company; however, the company liquidated before he could assume management. Determined to chart a new course, he earned an MBA from Stanford University. Upon graduation, his first job was at Security Bank in Southern California. In 1962, he joined John K. Stewart, eventually forming Stewart and Patten, an investment management company. His life's work was not only in building the business but also in creating deep and lasting relationships - both professional and personal. Those who knew him valued his wisdom and integrity. Though he spent more time traveling throughout the country and abroad in his later years, Ron continued working in the office until 2018, officially retiring at the age of 86.
Outside of his professional career, Ron embraced life with a spirit of adventure and a deep love of the outdoors. He was an avid fly fisherman, tennis player, gardener, and duck hunter–though the greatest joy of the hunt was always the companionship of his beloved English Setters. He passed on his enthusiasm for camping, backpacking, hiking, fishing, and bodysurfing to his children and grandchildren. Some of our fondest memories come from our backpacking trips in the Sierras, where he taught us how to spot constellations, build a fire, follow trail markers, and fly fish for trout. We can still picture him leading us up steep switchbacks, reassuring us that the destination was "just around the bend"–though it never was!
Above all, Ron treasured his family. He is survived by his wife, Sally, and their three children–David Patten (Bernadette), Linda Montgomery, and Cynthia Murner (Joseph). His grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues will remember him for his humor, warmth, and generosity. To the youngest in the family, he will forever be known as "the tickle monster" and a legendary pancake maker. Ron leaves behind a legacy of warmth and joy that will be carried in the hearts of all who knew him.
Services will be private.

I am one of many Crandall's who had their investment accounts with Stewart & Patten and worked with Ron for many years. He was such a friendly, warm and likable person and an excellent wealth manager. We enjoyed seeing him at some Crandall family events. I was so sorry to hear about his passing but I am impressed by the long and very full life that he led.

Dear family of Ron Patten,

On behalf of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of San Mateo County, we share in your sadness of saying goodbye to Ron and your peaceful hope to see him again in God's everlasting home.

We trust Ron's "cup of love" was full enough to be an "earlier arrival" welcomed by Jesus to his home with the eternal family of God and where he now waits to welcome you.

Ron, and the Stewart and Patten company he co-founded, created an investment company of the highest standard. As a result, the SVDP had invested its funds for the poor with great success over several years with Rob Gentry being our main contact. Investment gains were used to maintain our safety net help to neighbors in need 100% everywhere in the county; a very difficult standard to maintain for the past 60 years. We may have been a small investor, but Ron treated us as one of the most important! I can still remember him sitting in my office giving us his plan to generate investment income, based on his successful model developed for the company.

I have been a SVDP member for 50 years so I know the good impact Ron had made for the poor. You have much to be proud of and continue his legacy.

What a wonderful writeup, and the joy in that photo is so special! My parents were friends of Ron's and Sally's 'back in the day'; and in later years Ron was helpful, kind, and compassionate in helping my Mum navigate her financial and other life decisions. At the same time, he was a wonderful help to me when I sought out management of my own investments after Dad passed away. Ron was an all-around stellar human being, and I am lucky to have known him.

Hello to Sally- we are thinking about your loving and long marriage to a great guy: Wow! So glad you had each other!
Hello also to our dear brother in law Dave, and Cynthia & Linda- you three had a gem of a guy for a dad!
Ron was always so kind and generous with his time. We so enjoyed knowing and seeing him at family gatherings- he always seemed genuinely interested knowing how our lives were going- a rare and welcome characteristic.
We are sorry for your loss but happy he lived such a long and happy, productive life!

Sending hugs...
