On Sept. 7, 2025, Ronald Lewis Schrecengost, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Columbus, Pa., where he had resided since 1965.
He was born in Butler, Pa., son of Joseph and Lucille Schrecengost. Ron attended Karns City High School where he starred on the basketball team for the Gremlins. He graduated from Clarion College with a degree in mathematics. Ron was employed as a teacher and basketball coach in Corry for two years before going to teach in Panama, N.Y., where he went on to become an extremely successful boys basketball coach for the Panthers. Ron taught in Panama, N.Y., from 1963 to 1994.
He was the longest living member of the B.P.O.E. Corry Elks Club and a member of the Corry Rod and Gun Club. Ron's hobbies included watching his Westerns, reading Western novels by Zane Gray, hunting, fishing, softball, golf, skeet, pool shooting, playing golf and softball in local men's leagues, vacationing in the Outer Banks, and playing cards.
Ron was affectionately known as "Pop" by his loved ones and his family was the most important part of his life. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play and coach multiple sports, including basketball and softball.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Diane Walter Schrecengost, also known as "Pammie" to her family; as well as siblings Patricia Clingensmith, William Schrecengost, and Bobby Schrecengost, who died when he was a toddler.
Ron is survived by his three children, Michael Schrecengost, Laurie Sampsell, and Joseph Schrecengost, all of
Corry, Pa.; and a sister-in-law, Judy Fitzgerald, of Leeper, Pa. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Megan Kelly, and her husband, Ryan Kelly; Jana Steadman, and her husband Nick Steadman; Jordan Schrecengost; and Joshua Schrecengost, and his wife Sydney Schrecengost. Ron was also the proud great-grandfather of Leila Kelly, Malia Kelly, and Emeryson Schrecengost, as well as his first great-grandson who is on the way. Other survivors include his only living niece, Wendy Tung of Nevada; his son Mike's girlfriend Brenda Gass; and his stepgranddaughter Morgan Anderson.
No calling hours will be observed.
Family and friends may attend a Celebration of Life at Relevant Church, 100 W. South St.,
Corry, Pa., at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13. Pastor Les Utegg will officiate. Please join the family for meal and socialization at 4:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth's Parish Center, 33 W. Pleasant St., Corry.
Burial will be held at a later date in West Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Pa.
