Ronald Douglas Smith, 90, passed away Wednesday having lived a wonderful life. He was born in Glens Falls, NY to Carl and Mabel (Bradway) Smith. After college, he moved to Saratoga Springs, NY where he built a career and raised his family. In retirement, he moved to Boynton Beach, FL before settling into Ocala, FL. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Ann Smith, former elementary school teacher in the Saratoga Springs School District, and is survived by his partner, Elizabeth “Betty” Wiedemann, his children Kelly Smith-Lawless (Randy) of Ocala, FL and Kevin Smith (Pamela) of Encinitas, CA; his grandchildren Amanda Smith (Bianca) of North Hollywood, CA and Sean Smith (Kassidy) of McKinleyville, CA; his sister Penelope Benjamin of Newton, MA and cousins Jean Chiasson (David) of Queensbury, NY and Monica Lee Unger of Manhattan, NY.
Ronald was involved in the food industry for most of his life, starting with Grand Union throughout NY and VT, and then operating Slims Market in Saratoga Springs, then A&P and then in the wholesale business--he did it all. Every Spring, he did taxes as a hobby with H&R Block. Ron’s passions were his family, gardening and game playing. Ron loved cruising the globe, traveling to family reunions, playing golf, napping, eating out, watching sports, and playing numerous card and board games—his favorite being bridge with the guys or Rummikub with the family. He had a delightful sense of humor that he shared throughout his life.
The family wishes to thank Marjorie Marcus and the wonderful neighbors in Longleaf for their assistance this past year. At Ronald’s request, there will be no services. A celebration of Ronald’s life will be held on Father’s Day weekend 2026 in Saratoga Springs, NY.
