Ronald M. Socash
September 15, 1942 – January 10, 2025
Ron Socash, PGA Golf Professional, 82, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025.
Ron was a loving gentleman, always ready to help and never asking for himself. His warm and tender presence always brought happiness to those who knew him and he was always a welcome sight to see at any time.
An avid golfer, he played on the Kings College Golf Team and then became a PGA Golf Professional. He subsequently worked as an Assistant Golf Professional in Elmira, Albany, New York, Kansas City, Mo. and West Palm Beach, FL.
Most notably, in 1978, he became the Head Golf Professional at the Elmira Country Club, succeeding his Uncle Frank Socash, and retired from that position in 2000. The members of the club honored both he and Uncle Frank with a memorial plaque on the 17th hole of the golf course.
Upon retirement, he worked continuously as a volunteer for the New York State Golf Association (NYSGA). In 2013, Ron was named Volunteer of the Year. As a long-standing committee member of the NYSGA, Ron served on the Executive Committee, the Nominating Committee and as Co-Chairperson for the 2012 Men's Amateur Championship. Ron served on the Executive Committee until 2019.
He was the son of the late Tom and Leona Socash of Wyoming, Pa. and was preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Tommy, who passed away in 2009. He with his twin brother were 1960 graduates of Wyoming Memorial High School and were made Eagle Scouts on their 16th birthdays. Ron graduated from Kings College in 1965 with a B.S. in Business Administration and served honorably in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He is survived by his brother Jimmy Socash, his sisters-in-law Lorraine and Lucia Socash, nieces Jennifer Zampetti (married-Michael Zampetti), Theresa Socash (married-Bryan Hawkins), nephew Ronald James Socash, and grandnieces Gemma and Clara Zampetti. The family would like to personally thank John Youngman, Ron's caring and altruistic neighbor, and Lisa Sauer, for their unselfish thoughtfulness and care in the last years of Ron's life.
A memorial celebration luncheon will be held at the Elmira Country Club on Friday, May 23, from noon to 2pm with a memorial in Wilkes Barre, PA the following day.
