Rosalie "Rose" Antonia Shimek, age 93, of Seguin, passed away on June 13, 2025. Rose was born on September 10, 1931 in La Grange, Texas to Frieda (Staacke) and Joseph Paul Vecera.
Rose was from a large family being the fourth child of nine. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Rose graduated from St John Catholic High School in 1948. She met Otto E. Shimek while working at the bus station in Schulenburg and they married on June 17, 1952 after he returned from his tour of duty in Korea. A week later they drove from Schulenburg to Fort Smith, Arkansas enjoying only fritos and Dr Pepper. They lived there briefly while Otto finished his service in the army and when he was released in September, they returned to Texas. With the help of family, they built a home in Seguin where they spent the rest of their lives enjoying their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Rose, Otto, her brother Joe and his wife Esther ran a drive-in diner in Seguin until she started having children, then she spent her time raising their family. Once all seven children were in school, Rose decided to get her drivers license and started working for Motorola. She never felt like it was work though, because she enjoyed spending time with her co-workers who became life long friends.
Rose was a longtime member of St James Catholic Church. She loved sewing, cake decorating, tending her flowers, reading biographies, traveling and spending time with her family. Rose dedicated her life to her family and made sure everyone felt special.
Rose was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years Otto E. Shimek, her parents, daughter Jeanette Franklin, brothers Joseph Vecera, James Vecera, Raymond Vecera, sister Frieda Bednar and several brothers/sisters-n-laws.
Survivors include her children JoAnn Orwick(Steve), Michael Shimek(Toni), Harold Shimek(Denise), Glenn Shimek(Tina), Sharon Moore and Barbara Shimek; grandchildren Kathryn Reed(Michael), Alan Orwick(Melissa),Shawn Shimek(Isa), Aimee Shimek, Aaron Shimek(Jessica), Garrett Shimek, Andrew Moore, and Kristin Moore; great grandchildren Megan Bateman(Josh), Marissa Shimek, and Vera Shimek; great great grandchildren Rilynn Bateman, Kyson Bateman. Also, her sisters Margaret Kozel, Evelyn Janecka, Mary Muras and brother Lawrence Vecera and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin on Monday, June 23, 2025 at 12 noon at St. James Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers will be Alan Orwick, Shawn Shimek, Aaron Shimek, Garrett Shimek, Andrew Moore and Michael Reed.
