Rose Hoffman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Waite Funeral Home Medina on Dec. 27, 2025.
On December 23, 2025, Rose Marie Hoffman, age 90, passed away peacefully at HMC, Hospice of Medina County. In her last days, she was surrounded by the love of her family. Rose was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, to the late Felix and Mae (Tabor) McParland and grew up in Shadyside, Ohio.

She graduated from Bellaire St. John's High School in 1953. There she met her husband of 60 years, John E. Hoffman, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life. Rose graduated with a degree in chemistry from Ohio Dominican University in 1957. Rose and John were married shortly before he completed his service to the U.S. Army in Baumholder, Germany. She gave birth to her first child there. Rose and John moved back to Ohio after John's discharge from the Army. And with three children following over the next four years, they were soon immersed in parenthood, raising their children in Martins Ferry, Ohio, where they lived until relocating to Medina, Ohio upon retirement. As a busy young mother, Rose somehow found time to earn a master's in education degree from the University of Dayton. She taught math to middle school students in the Martins Ferry school system for more than 20 years.

Family and faith were central to Rose's life. A devoted Christian and lifelong Catholic, she drew strength from prayer. Rose also put her faith into practice. She was actively involved in the Ministry of Assistance of Holy Martyrs Church, 3100 S. Weymouth Rd., Medina 44256, taught CCD at her former parish in Martins Ferry, and served as a tutor for Project Learn.

Family was everything to Rose. Affectionately referred to as "Grandma Rose" or "G," she was actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren, attending many of their educational and extracurricular events. She relished her time with family, particularly holiday get-togethers (her nut rolls, cookies, cakes and pies were the stuff of legend, necessitating many a January diet) and annual vacations on Hilton Head Island.

Rose is survived by sons John (Lisa) Hoffman, Jr. and Tom Hoffman; daughters Ellen (John) Bradley and Karen (Dave) Shultz; grandchildren Rebekah Ellwitz, Jordan and Nathan Rohe and Kelsey Wigley; Jocelyn Catignani and Daniel Hoffman; Andrew Hoffman; Lauren Brooks and Martin and Colin Bradley; Jordan and Morgan Shultz and Jillian Robinson; and her "adoptive grandchild" Brenden Bryant; great-grandchildren Jaxon and Penelope Hoffman; Liam and Alexis Ellwitz; Gavin, Aubrey and Olivia Rohe; Hallie and Josie Wigley; Cam and Leo Brooks, and Elyse and Lola Robinson. Rose was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, her beloved Aunt Betty and her brothers Felix and Cliff.

A private viewing and funeral mass will be held to celebrate Rose's life.
